He appears to have been a Sgt, the references to him being a Lt arise from his statement to the capturing Union forces in April 1865; as this crosses NCO/CO territory, it seems plausible he may have been lying to obtain preferential treatment as a commissioned officer and increase his chances of immediate gentlemanly release.
