[edit]It's been almost 12 years since the end the events of Nemesis (the last book in the Falco series) and Flavia Albia has become a private informer herself, living in the very same building her adopted father Falco was once based in. The story begins with Albia being hired by the owner of a construction firm, Salvidia, to protect her from the parents of a child accidentally killed by one of her workers (as well as to help in preparing a defence against charges being brought upon Salvidia by the local aedile, Manlius Faustus), but Salvidia soon passes away before she can even pay Albia and the firm is dissolved by her stepson, Metellus Nepos. All is not lost however - after a brief discussion about Salvidia's death with Albia, Metellus Nepos decides that his stepmother's death was suspicious, and hires Albia to investigate.
