Governed or treated?

[edit]

The article contains the phrase:

"are sometimes governed as trigraphs and tetragraphs.".

Is "treated" meant, instead of "governed"?Redav (talk) 16:40, 10 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Alternative names

[edit]

@Alexwikix: Thank you for updating the article to reflect the MoE's new official name for the system. I updated the references to reflect the most recent versions of the reference documents.

There is now the question of what alternative names should be listed. Given that it has been promoted under the name "Tâi-uân Bân-lâm-gí Lô-má-jī Phing-im Hong-àn" for almost 20 years, the system is still often referred to by the old official name. I recognise that the term "Bân-lâm-gí" is contentious, but it has not fallen out of use. Even if it does fall out of use, it is used in the system's original name, which is an important historical name that should be included according to WP:OTHERNAMES and MOS:ALTNAME. Furthermore, some references cited in this article use the old name. At the very least, I believe we should include the old name in the infobox (as in my previous edit). We may want to also discuss the name change in the body of the article. The name change is not without controversy, e.g. as discussed in this article on Language Log.

On the other hand, what was previously listed as the first alternative name (referring to the language as "Tâi-gí") no longer seems necessary, since the new official name subsumes it. The orthographic distinction between 臺語 and 台語 is relatively minor, since the two characters are often used interchangeably (even if they are both used in the new official name). As a comparison, the article on Taiwanese Mandarin does not list the two variants as separate names. Having just the full name "Tâi-uân Tâi-gí Lô-má-jī Phing-im Hong-àn" and the most common short abbreviation "Tâi-lô" seems sufficient to me, following MOS:INFOBOXPURPOSE, to avoid infobox bloat. The other alternative names (using "Bân-lâm-gí" and "Kàu-io̍k-pōo") seem different enough to be included. Freelance Intellectual (talk) 15:34, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
