Fletcher Christian

[edit]

Is this the same St Bees which Fletcher Christian was a pupil? --ukexpat 14:40, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Supposedly, yes. I know for a fact his brother went to St. Bees, though for some reason the history of the school doesn't mention Fletcher Christian. A William Fletcher Christian did attend, which may have confused the DNB biographer. Just a supposition. Harlsbottom (talk) 12:20, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re-assessment

[edit]

This article is developing well. It should really be a B, but you need to add some references in the text to achieve the B rating for WP Schools (the existing reference list seems to be in effect a further reading list). Try and cut down on some of the trivia about the internal organisation of the school, exam timetables, terms, etc. The article would benefit from a section about the subjects which are taught at school. The alumni section should be re-arranged in alphabetical order or chronological order. You should aim to have references for all the alumni to prove that they attended the school. I'm upgrading the article to high importance based on its long history and the alumni. Dahliarose (talk) 22:32, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am somewhat surprised that basic information about the school is considered "trivia", especially since GA and FA school articles have similar information listed. Granted, a section on subjects would be welcome, however I for one am in no position to attest as to what subjects are studied currently. The alumni section is already in chronological order. I am currently working on a separate referenced list of almuni which will be moved into the mainspace in due course. Harlsbottom (talk) 13:40, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree with such a high rating. There is still much wrong with the article, viz., school brochure-style promo-spam, uncited text and need for tighter copy-editing (apologies to Guild of Copyeditors), and certainly doesn't merit a 'B'. Acabashi (talk) 10:57, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In line with the changes to correct the Grindal biography pages, the fact of Grindal being born in St Bees is confirmed. Also additional graphics added - Quad from church tower, taken from the scaffolding when the tower was restored - a view unlikely to be repeated for some time Dougsim (talk) 07:23, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Article Re-asessment June 2011

[edit]

I am having a look at this article after a request on Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/Assessment. I am assessing this article against the B class criteria.

*The article is suitably referenced, with inline citations where necessary. checkY

i.e. It has reliable sources, and any important or controversial material which is likely to be challenged is cited. The use of citation templates such as {{cite web}} is not required.

The article has a good number of citations, with widespread use of templates. For further development, I think it would be preferable to have a look for some more independent resources, so have a look at [books.google.com] and [scholar.google.com] for example. Overall I feel that the referencing in this article is adequate for B-class, but could do with some improvement.

*The article reasonably covers the topic, and does not contain obvious omissions or inaccuracies.  Although...

i.e. It contains a large proportion of the material necessary for an A-Class article, although some sections may need expansion, and some less important topics may be missing.

On reading through I could not see any glaring omissions, I covers the topic well although there is still room to improve detail on some sections. On a stylistic note, I would find a better way of presenting the table in the curriculum section (or consider cutting the whole section) as this will definitely get dragged up at a GA review in the future.

*The article has a defined structure. checkY

i.e. Content should be organized into groups of related material, including a lead section and all the sections that can reasonably be included in an article of its kind.

Yep, no problems.

*The article is reasonably well-written.checkY

i.e. The prose contains no major grammatical errors and flows sensibly, but it certainly need not be "brilliant". The Manual of Style need not be followed rigorously.

The majority of the content is well written, however a good copy edit would be beneficial.

*The article contains supporting materials where appropriate. checkY

i.e. Illustrations are encouraged, though not required. Diagrams and an infobox etc. should be included where they are relevant and useful to the content.

Images and maps are included.

*The article presents its content in an appropriately understandable way.checkY

i.e. It is written with as broad an audience in mind as possible. Although Wikipedia is more than just a general encyclopedia, the article should not assume unnecessary technical background and technical terms should be explained or avoided where possible.

Any local terminology is well explained, and the article is generally written in an easily understandable way.

I am therefore upgrading this article to B-Class. On the whole it is developing nicely, some areas could do with some more detail, and a few alumni on the list are not notable, I would infact suggest moving this list to a separate article like: List of Old Guildfordians (Royal Grammar School, Guildford). If any editor needs any more suggestions/help, please leave a message on my talk page. GlanisTalk 13:32, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the assessment, I'll have a look at the points you raise.Airjevans (talk) 07:16, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

this needs to be moved

[edit]

THe correct name is St Bees School. Standard English usage is to only use full stops for abbreviations, not contractions. Bobble hobble dobble (talk) 14:20, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted your edit and move. The school uses the full stop in this way all the time - see the school website. It is therefore the correct usage in this case, despite the fact that you are correct on the English grammar. Also, by doing a find-and-replace edit, you managed to break the article's links and pictures. Nice one... Airjevans (talk) 20:22, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
