Haswell-Smith provides a snippet about the "ruins of a Cistercian Hermitage" that belonged to the nunnery on (or adjacent to) the island of Fidra. He says that on the Dissolution in 1561 the "North Berwick and Fidra sisterhood consisted of eleven nuns, each drawing an annual income of £20. Although this was a very considerable income, and they came of good families, not one of them could sign her name." Ben MacDui 17:17, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
