Pronunciation

[edit]

I was rather baffled when I clicked the sound file explaining how to pronounce Skien, because I was expecting it to document the well-known pronunciation oddity, but instead it pronounced it exactly wrong! :( Skien, while being spelt "Skien", is not pronounced like you would pronounce "Skien" in regular Norwegian, but rather like the former incarnation of the city name, Scheen. The spelling has changed, but the pronunciation hasn't. This should be reflected in the sound file. For the English-speakers reading this, approximately like "Shay-ehn", not "Shee-ehn" - rather different, I'd say. I shall rectify this by creating a new sound file as soon as possible. In the meantime, I have removed the link to the offending sound file. Mirithing (talk) 15:13, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A new sound file is uploaded. I hope it fits better. Sam Vimes 17:25, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Much better! --Bitjungle (talk) 09:29, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
FYI: I have also included the sound file in no:Skien#Uttale (with explanation of why this is the correct pronunciation). --Bitjungle (talk) 14:38, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Fantastic, you're the best! <3 I still haven't found my microphone :\ Mirithing (talk) 15:08, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
How about including how the BaneNor PA voice pronounces it as an alternative option? I know of many norwegians saying "schien", but the PA voice says "skIen". That must be somewhat correct, right? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.175.35.45 (talk) 06:08, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Historic questions

[edit]

The peculiarity of the pronunciation of Skien, may say to mirror the oddity of its history. The question is regarded whether or not Skien may come to be looked upon as a free imperial city, or something close to it. I wonder because the economic elite of the city was dominated by Patricians in the time of Henrik Ibsen. For how long, and how profound has such domination marked its heritage? --Xact (talk) 19:18, 24 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

...i'm convinced it's a port, bcz the heavy water was supposed pass thru it!

[edit]

What's this, were all the primary contributors people from the countryside, who came to Skien's premier academic institution to study Ibsen and Grieg, but never wandered down to the water? Surely it's an F'ing PORT city, yet no mention of the adjacent seaways. I'm making reference to Skagerrak and the strait adjacent to it, and their respective adjacent seas, simply in the belief that almost anything is a better starting point than nuttin'. And if i'm completely wrong, at least replace my errors with mention of why the Norsk Hydro traffic wasn't put into holds there.

*Sigh* OK, it's not a port, its another inland location in a part of Norway whose situation is kinda compensated for by all those cool fjords they have. It sounds like we flatlanders may never get it about places where you can't pull a Huck Finn to get to salt water.
