Large edit

[edit]

I'm currently in the process of making a substantial edit to this article which will clear out unreferenced material and add several new sections plus an extensive bibliography and some fancy nick-knacks like an expanded infobox and portal links. The new article, at the moment, has the sections:
• Biography (Early Years, Abroad, Arrest and Death) • Thought (Nationalist-Liberalism, Korean Ethnic Nationalism, Juche, Social Darwinism, Anarchism, Religion) • Criticism (Unrealistic Standards of Education, Concerns With Minjok Theory) • Bibliography (Bibliographical Notes) • References • See Also • External Links
It's still largely incomplete, but with persistence it won't take too long. Some sections might get deleted, some might get merged into others. If anyone would like to contribute or help out, feel free to drop me a line.

Progress on the article's completion has been slowed down by real-world work picking up. Also, English resources explicitly discussing Shin's anarchist beliefs are somewhat sparse at my university, which does not have a large Korean, or for that matter East Asian, collection. I might luck out though and find something. Strangejames (talk) 01:50, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Done; the next things to work on are Shin's Social Darwinism and Confucianism/Confucian Studies.

1905

[edit]

According to this article [1], he taught at a hagwon in 1905 and founded another school. Should we work this in somehow?--Crossmr (talk) 02:13, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Shoudln't the article have an 'A' Anarchist symbol on the page, to show his Anarchist heritage too? He was certainly different from other late 1800's/early 20th C Anarchists, because he was also a nationalist -- but he is a part of Anarchist history, and is known worldwide for it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rutherfordlad (talkcontribs) 14:31, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Name spelling inconsistency

[edit]

Last month, Toobigtokale added a cleanup tag to the article, due to an inconsistency with the spelling of the subject's name. Most of the way through the article "Shin" is used, but "Sin" is in the title and in the bibliography. It appears that this inconsistency may have been introduced due to a unilateral move carried out in 2017. @Garam: could you explain what your rationale for the move was? And @Strangejames: As you are the main contributor to this article, and the above move was carried out after you revised the article, I thought we should ask your thoughts on the matter. Which do you think would be better to use for standardisation purposes, "Shin" or "Sin"?

According to Google Ngrams, "Shin Chae-ho" was more common through most of the late-20th century, but it seems that since then the two haven't had a clear favourite in sources.[2] I think I may be leaning towards us moving the article name back to "Shin Chae-ho", unless there's a good reason for the earlier move. --Grnrchst (talk) 22:28, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with this post. As an additional argument for "Shin", "Shin" is generally the more common English romanization for 신 in general, so I think we should prefer it given common spelling of this person's name is unclear. toobigtokale (talk) 00:01, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello there. It has been a while since I worked on this article. I believe I went with the transliteration "Shin" since it appeared to be more common than "Sin," and (to my ear) seems to be closer to how that name is pronounced. Take care Strangejames (talk) 00:27, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sin ChaehoShin Chae-ho – Per the talk page discussion. This page was moved unilaterally, without discussion or explanation, by a now-inactive user. The spelling "Shin Chae-ho" appears to have been more historically common.[3] The spelling "Shin Chae-ho" is supported by the user that wrote the bulk of the article (User:Strangejames) and by the user that highlighted the inconsistency in the use of spelling between the text and the title (User:Toobigtokale). If this move is carried out, it will also need to be done for the category of the same name. Grnrchst (talk) 09:40, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
