Vote to Merge

[edit]
  • I have personally handled and am familiar with the book The Secret History of the Mongols. I am not, however, famailiar with a book entitled The Secret Book of the Mongols. I suspect that they are one in the same. I am in favor of merging the contents of these two topics under the name The Secret History of the Mongols because that is the book's title.

  • I agree. These articles are clearly on the same topic. (It seems ironic to me that The Secret Book of the Mongols page is better written and contains more information than The Secret History of the Mongols page, given that the latter is the correct title.)

hope they could serve someone bolder than I... --euyyn 15:59, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This article should be completely rewritten. The first part is too short and the second part is a collection of irrelevant anecdotes and misleading information. If you have the time to study the sources, go ahead! Not much boldness required in this case. --Latebird 09:20, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Poorly written

[edit]

This is very poorly written throughout, and doesn't have a story. An example of unclear writing would be From the age of 3 to 5, perhaps as a result of this his family inadvertently left Temujin (Genghis Khan) behind when moving camp. As a result of what? DigitalEnthusiast 00:31, 9 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have rewritten some stuff, and culled the 'life of Chinggis'-section because IMO all of this belongs to the Genghis Khan article. If someone disagrees, feel free to (partially) restore the earlier version. Yaan 09:50, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've hoped someone would do this for quite some time now... ;) However, it would be nice to have a summary of the more legendary parts of the story, which don't really belong in Genghis Khan. --Latebird 10:22, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the entry could use some good content - also some more stuff on the discovery and translations. Maybe some other day ;). Yaan 10:28, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

"In China, the work had been well-known as a scholarly study of Mongol history as well as translation of Mongolian language during the Ming Dynasty." This seems to refer only to the glossary, not to the Secret History per se (which is in Mongolian, transscribed with chinese characters). I'll revert this for now. transcription

[edit]

I partially reverted one edit that aimed at making clear that the original language of the work was Mongolian. The problem, IMHO, was that this edit seemed to give the impression that those transcriptions (not translations!) with Chinese characters were not in Mongolian language. In fact, they are Mongolian too, it's just the writing system that has changed, the text does make no sense at all in Chinese, at least without the glossary and the translation.

For a small example, see the title of the work: 忙豁侖紐察 脫[卜]察安 makes no sense in Chinese. It can make sense if we understand it is supposed to be a phonetic transcription from Mongolian: The pronounciation is quite similar to Mongolun niuca tobčiyan. I hope the intro is sufficiently clear now. Yaan (talk) 18:08, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
