I've read that ariosto connects this love with the family d'Este of Ferrara (his patrons). However, im not familiar with the work, so it would be great if someone could confirm this. Scampioen (talk)
Yes, the noble house d'Este of Ferrara were the patrons of both Ludovico Ariosto and Matteo Maria Boiardo. According to the two poems, "Orlando innamorato" and "Orlando furioso" the romantic pairing of Bradamante and Ruggiero were destined to be the noble ancestors of the d'Estes.
