Swiping controversy
[edit]Text from "Rich Buckler Sues Comics Journal and two of its Writers for Libel," The Comics Journal #88 (January 1984), p. 13:
“ | In his lawsuit, Buckler contends that the Journal and its writers have, on two separate occasions, "maliciously and willfuly contrived to injure and defame the plaintiff, in his character and reputation, and to destroy him in his profession and calling."
The first instance cited by Buckler occurred in The Comics Journal #80; in this issue, Greenberger, reviewing an issue of The Mighty Crusaders edited, written, and drawn by Buckler, cited a line of dialogue uttered by the hero as racist. Three issues later, in #83, the Journal featured a review by White of another Archie comic written and drawn by Buckler, in which he accused Buckler of plagiarism. White based his accusation on a four-page strip credited to Buckler, all of which consisted of material redrawn from the work of Jack Kirby. The article was buttressed by two pages of art reproductions, matching Kirby's work and Buckler's work panel by panel. Both White and Greeenberger were highly critical of Buckler's work on the series. . . . The three co-defendants have all declared that they are ready to fight the accusations in court, since they find them, in White's words, "frivolous and without merit." White, who was once sued for libel in the early '60s (the case was dropped before it went to trial) and thus has experience in libel cases, told the Journal that he expects the case to be "thrown out of court. I don't see the slightest chance of him winning." Groth's only other comment on the matter was "Here we go again." Groth is currently defending himself against a $2,000,000 libel suit brought against him, The Comics Journal, and Harlan Ellison by comics writer Michael Fleisher. . . . |
