I propose renaming this article Rice–SMU football rivalry, or Rice–SMU rivalry if it covers other sports. While the game is indeed sometimes called the "Battle for the Mayor's Cup", it isn't the most common way of referring to it; usually descriptive names are used. The current title is also used for any number of other games; the only relevant Google Books hit for "Battle for the Mayor's Cup" refers to a game between Tulsa and Oral Roberts University.[1] The Google News archives turn up a number of college and high school games.[2]Rice–SMU football rivalry is clear, in line with use in the sources, recognizable to readers, and consistent with a growing number of articles in Category:College football rivalries in the United States.
