Gameplay

[edit]

IGN apparently has information on the gameplay: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/970/970942p1.html Iyeru42 (talk) 17:09, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Character Descriptions

[edit]

They are kind of a bit awkward to read. Why is the adjective "beautiful" used for every female character? Sounds like they are taken straight from a website or something —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.202.205.138 (talk) 03:11, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What do you expect? Making the game appeal to socially awkward nerds is a selling point. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 123.243.172.243 (talk) 08:00, 23 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Have you seen the characters? I can't think of any better adjective. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.82.6.179 (talk) 00:14, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What do we expect? i expect neutral tone, so no, I'll be removing anything that isn't neutral like "beautiful", "horrible" or anything else. I also question whether we should use the European cover, considering that isn't the largest English speaking base.Bread Ninja (talk) 15:46, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There's nothing wrong with using the European cover art. This isn't the American Wikipedia. Geoff B (talk) 15:51, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Geoff B, I'm looking for more promotional cover, this is English Wikipedia, but not every single english cover will do, due to various reasons anime and manga have strictly been keeping the original Japanese cover. This could apply to here, but with which audience will recognize the cover Europe or north American, I'm not leaning north American due to region, but it's a bigger English speaking base than europe. Some readers will not recognize the rating it has. that's why ESBR which is far more recognizable can be added in.
The amount of people who will recognise the rating, over the article's lifetime, is miniscule. It makes no difference. The cover art is exactly the same. There's no real reason to switch to the NA cover, especially given the NA bias already present in Wikipedia. Geoff B (talk) 16:42, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not even going by NA specifically, but whatever. what about characters age and missing story? i renamed the section because there was no story to itBread Ninja (talk) 16:46, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The plot needs work as well, has that biography type of story. plus it's more of a setting than a story. This is Wikipedia, not a fan site or a game guide. try to keep it neutral and not like it was copied right off of the back of the cover, or something similar to that. I also question the ages of the characters being important in the character section. SO if anyone can give me a reason why they should be kept, please say so now, or else i might remove them some time soon. Bread Ninja (talk) 16:06, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The description of the protagonists contains a major spoiler in the Leanne/Reanbell description. Also, there is no point to split Leanne and Subject 20 as they are the same character. If someone could change that it would be nice, otherwise I will do it myself in a few days.Shawn5150 (talk) 17:44, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed it too, i wanted to ask if they were the same character due to the name switch in No.20, ok i'll fix it.Bread Ninja (talk) 17:48, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think we could delete this whole paragraph because it is a major spoiler ( this fact is only revealed at the very end of the game ) and is also wrong.

She was once a girl named Subject #20 (実験体20号, Jikken tai nijū gou?)who was raised in a research facility. Her body has been biologically controlled to expire on her 20th birthday. Knowing that she has only a year to live, the girl escapes from the Etasil research facility, intending to defy her fate by committing suicide. As she plummeted from a tower, Zephyr decided to save her. Which resulted to became known as Leanne/Reanbell, apparently living past her expiration date.

This quote is also another major spoiler

Zephyr possesses a tough outlook on life, stemming from a hatred of god that results in him performing a school shooting.

This sentence is also really subjective and contain a spoiler

but to Subject #20, he is a trustworthy man

I suggest we delete this three sentences. If no one disagree with me I will delete them in a few days.Shawn5150 (talk) 22:30, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

We do not remove spoilers, Wikipedia is to inform, as long as it's relevant and important. If the information is incorrect, fix it but do not remove it. Please look at WP:SPOILER Bread Ninja (talk) 15:30, 20 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed the wrong informations ( about Leanne name, Aetersyl facility and moved Subject 20 to the Juris description). But I think we should still delete this sentence

but to Subject #20, he is a trustworthy man

because in the game Leanne never say that she find him trustworthy, he is just a paternal figure to Leanne. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shawn5150 (talkcontribs) 09:35, 21 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That one is ok to remove since it seems trivial and original research, but I'm still questioning whether we should actually mention the age. the age has usually been a trivial aspect of a character. i really suggest we remove it.I may not have played the game, but whatever you removed seems a little to much. are you absolutely sure it's "incorrect"? i said fix it, not remove.Bread Ninja (talk) 15:24, 21 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For the age, we could probably make something like the Galerians page. I find it more clear for the age and voice acting. If you like it, I will do it for this article. There is still some wrong informations in the description of the characters, Leanne never escaped from Aetersyl, Cardinal Rowen let her go, I could probably change that. I will try to write a plot section in the next days as I think it will help a lot to understand the characters and the story of the game.Shawn5150 (talk) 12:43, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I actually don't think that's a good idea, that article is also in start level and has less references than here. again, why did you remove the information about subject #20? It didn't seem like it was incorrect, it had it's name written in the nihongo template. If no real reason is given, then i'll put it back in, that even means if i get no answer. there already is a plot section, but the there are sub sections to be filled, setting is already filled, all we need is story.Bread Ninja (talk) 15:25, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed the information about subject #20 because only Cardinal Rowen and Sullivan call Leanne by that nickname. Moreover, she is only called by that nickname very few times in the game and only because they do not know her real name. Also, Juris, who made the experiment on her call her Leanne. So there is no real point to include the nickname subject #20 ( Leanne ) in the wiki and not Rebecca ( who is an extremely important character for the story ). But if you really want to include it again in the article I will not delete it. And for the story, I will write it and put it on this discussion page, because I'm not really sure of my writing style.Shawn5150 (talk) 20:34, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I doubt it's just a nickname, but i'll look more into it before adding it in, if i do than it probably was important to add in. I'm going to remove the ages too, they aren't important at allBread Ninja (talk) 15:21, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Story

[edit]

Here is the story of the game. Please, rewrite it for the article because I think it does not meet the quality standard of this site.

In the distant future, Earth has undergone a drastic change in the environment. For reasons unknown, poisonous layers of gases permeated the land, causing cancer, which resulted in near extinction for mankind due to humanity's inability to adapt to the new changes. The remaining humans built a gigantic device called Basel, an environment purifier buried deep in the ground, which cleanses the air in the surrounding land, it was called the Zenith system. Civilization began to reform around Basel itself, building a city around the tower. In order to overcome the cancer, human lives were tied to quartz and linked to the Zenith system, making them immune to disease and mutation, but requiring them to remain in the city, and giving them a set shelf-life.

Civilization gradually began to grow around Basel, with people eventually moving inside the machine itself and building up the core, raising it high above the planet’s surface. As centuries went on, people built levels around the core and established various towns, cities, and even theme parks and landmarks for the survivors to enjoy themselves. However, Basel has now existed so long that people have forgotten why they live there, or that there is even a world outside Basel. Many parts of Basel have become eroded and filled with monsters. No one knows where the monsters came from. This neglect and forgetfulness may be the fault of the Cardinals, who are the political/religious leaders that foster a worship of Basel and its machinery. The Cardinals built their luxurious mansions in the uppermost layers of Basel, in the monster-free “Chandelier”, while the lower classes reside among the many districts built around the base and stem of the tower.

Countless years after the move to the tower, Prelate Frieda dreams of a world where people could live free of this quartz, and enjoy a life on their own terms. She pushed for the idea of a world where people would control their own destiny. Because of this preaching, she attracted the cardinals as followers, with Cardinal Rowen as her closest friend and follower. Her ideas were appealing to people, but also radical, and she was unfortunately killed.

The death of Prelate Frieda drove Cardinal Rowen into a state of despair. He wanted to bring her back, as he loved her dearly. He discovered the truth of Zenith, and its powers over life and death, and wanted to exploit them to bring her back. He commissioned Sullivan to find a way to do this, and the experiments began. They found 20 children, and began using the quartz to experiment on their lifespans and seeing the effects it had, ultimately setting their quartz to cause them to expire on a certain birthday. If they could control death, Sullivan believed, they could control life. Rowen didn't originally approve of these experiments, but he was willing to go to any length to discover a way to bring the Prelate back.

Unfortunately, a few things went wrong. Juris, who was in charge of the experiment, took a liking to subject #20 ( Leanne ), and began to feel guilty over what they had done to the 20 childrens. Rather than kill her, he implanted her quartz within her body, essentially fooling the system and putting her life "in her own hands".

With the disease ravaging humanity, there were many who simply would not fit into Basel, and were left outside to die. Most people died, but a precious few developed mutations to allow them to not only beat off the disease, but become incredibly strong and able to survive in this environment. They became effectively immortal, and the next sort of stage of human evolution and they hated Basel and the Zenith system for abandoning them. Rebecca, an human who live outside of Basel, attacked the city because of this fury, and slaughtered many of the people, until she got to Vashyron.

Vashyron was a "Knight of Zenith", a person blessed by the Zenith system to be able to survive even above and beyond the normal populace. When she attacked him, Zenith struck out against her, breaking her mind as well as saving his life. In this state Sullivan found her, and saw an opportunity. Sullivan dreamed of living outside of Basel, and this test subject would be perfect for his research. If he could copy her traits, he could free people from the place once and for all. So he took Rebecca and began experimenting on her in a new set of experiments, involving 20 more children, of which Zephyr was one. His experiments wanted to create a strain of human completely independent of the Zenith system, and built on his former research.

Things went wrong again however when Zephyr escaped. He had been enhanced by the experiment with incredibly speed and strength, but he was angry at having his fate taken from him. He flew into a rage, killing those involved and blowing up the Seminary where the research was conducted. He expected to die for what he had done, and tried to commit suicide by hunter, only to be saved by Zenith itself after Vashyron shot him in the head twice. He decided to live to try to figure out why he was spared, and worked for Vashyron.

One year later, Leanne was nearing the time of her appointed death after running away. She attempted to kill herself, wanting to die on her own terms, only to have Zephyr catch her in the air and use his own incredibly durable body to cushion her fall and save her life. In her, he found a reason for living. She became the reason that "God"(Zenith) spared his life, and he had to care for her. Meanwhile, she lived on, despite Cardinal Rowen saying she would not, because her quartz was in her body.

Sullivan is taking the research that has been conducted and want to make the ultimate tool, something to control Zenith. He takes Cardinal Rowen's ring, and binds the control system into it, eventually providing him with control over life and death in Basel. With this incredible power coming to him, Cardinal Rowen has a crisis of faith, as he is going from following God to being God himself. If God can be controlled, than his faith is being shaken to the core. Meanwhile, Sullivan is studying Rebecca to find a way for humans to live utterly apart from Zenith, in secret. Their goals are both in line with Prelate Frieda to an extent, but different methods. Cardinal Rowen seeks to control Zenith, while Sullivan seeks to leave it entirely.

Meanwhile, Leanne walks past Cardinal Rowen at Christmas, and he realizes she is alive. This causes his internal issues to come to a head as she shouldn't be if Zenith can be truly controlled as Sullivan has said. He needs to believe that there truly is a God beyond Zenith, and sees her continued existence as proof of that possibility. Or perhaps Sullivan just lied to him about the experiments. He needs to know which one is correct, so he goes to hunt Sullivan down and get answers.

This leads to the scene where Cardinal Rowen shoots Sullivan. He overhears Sullivan telling the heroes that he has Leanne quartz, and if he is killed her quartz will be destroyed and she will die. Cardinal Rowen shoots Sullivan, expecting Leanne to die shortly after due to this, and prove that there is no God, or live, and validate the existence of God. This of course sets Zephyr on a rampage of revenge, as his reason for existence has just been effectively killed in front of his eyes, and he swears to hunt Cardinal Rowen down and kill him. Of course both groups are being played by Sullivan who has no clue where Leanne's quartz is, but he wants Cardinal Rowen to go through with the Zenith control system's usage, and realize that his God is false.

Cardinal Rowen then gathers his forces into the Basillica, waits for the heroes to come kill him, and speak about how if God wants to stop it to step in and do so. He is attempting to force God's hand, and validate his faith. The heroes fights their way to him, confronts him, and ultimately defeats him, with Zephyr putting a bullet through his heart. But he lives due to his own control of Zenith. He realizes that the experiment was a success, due to his survival, and uses the power of Zenith to ensure the survival of the other Cardinals. Vashyron recognizes the symbol, and has the party just leave, realizing that fighting is futile given the power Cardinal Rowen wields.

Meanwhile Rebecca destroys the quartz she was given. This quartz was actually Sullivan's own quartz, as he had succeeded in his second experiment. His own life was no longer bound by Zenith, and he was now able to roam the world and see it as Rebecca had. Cardinal Rowen realizes that his faith was misplaced, and discards the ring, realizing what a fool he has been worshiping a glorified computer as a God.

The story ends with Leanne looking into the sky, with Zephyr and Vashyron with her, outside of Basel.Shawn5150 (talk) 23:36, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

the beginning already is in the pot section but in the setting sub-section. summarize it and try to make it sound less story like.Bread Ninja (talk) 02:43, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have added the story to the main article as I think no one will look here to rewrite it. Maybe someone will read it in the main article and rewrite it. I prefer an awkward story for now than no story at all.Shawn5150 (talk) 13:57, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Be patient and take the time to at least review, we can't rewrite it for you all the time. but fine...I'll rewrite since you wont do it. seriously though you didin't even take the chance to fix what i said, now it's not akward but repetitious and looks like a bad story not akwardBread Ninja (talk) 19:30, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I will rewrite it myself, please do not edit it. And no, I did take your suggestions in account but they were copy/pasted of an old webpage http://forums.gametrailers.com/thread/official-resonance-of-fate-thr/971643 with info from before the release of the game. I suggest you play the game first before editing this article because it seems clear you have no idea what is important and what's not.Shawn5150 (talk) 20:30, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've edited long summary without playing the game before, and they turned out fine, i know what i'm doing even without playing the game. as long you get the beginning, outcome, and relevance to the story , then it's fine, anything going side track will be removed, or summarized if it that event reveals something.Bread Ninja (talk) 21:08, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Out of curiosity, where is this story information coming from? Most of this is not explained in the game. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.44.151.4 (talk) 14:27, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It came from the game. The story is not only told in the cinematic but mostly in the conversation with the NPC, in boss battle ( a lot of story elements are in this battles which you can't always hear because the game interrupts them if you make an action ) and in town.Shawn5150 (talk) 16:44, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
that's a bit of orginal research, i suggest keep anything we are sure is vital to the story.Bread Ninja (talk) 16:47, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm speed-running the game at the moment, taking notes of the major events in the game. I will add precise references for every major subjects in the story, and maybe delete some part I cannot re-find references in the game. I will finish my work in an hour or two.Shawn5150 (talk) 18:47, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've added lots of references to the story section, deleted parts where I could not find solid references. I hope the story is more clear now.Shawn5150 (talk) 22:00, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Youtube is not a reliable source, it can be used as a an external ink, but it would have to be an official page.Bread Ninja (talk) 15:19, 7 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sadly there is no Official page with all the cinematic of the game, only Youtube fan-made pages, so the story section will have to do without references for now. Or maybe, I could add where in the game you can find them ( chapter number, boss battle, cinematic, NPC conversation, etc) but I don't know if Wikipedia rules allows it.Shawn5150 (talk) 13:56, 8 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Citing the game seems to suffice, even for good articles. Geoff B (talk) 14:21, 8 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
PLot doesn't even need to be cited, only if there are areas where it can be questioned or added non neutral tone. for example zephyr angrily did this, or something. And no Shawn, if a source is unreliable, we don't keep it until reliable ones, it has to be removed.Bread Ninja (talk) 17:59, 8 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

JRPG vs Japanese role playing game

[edit]

I see that all mention of Japanese role playing game in the article have been edited to the acronym JRPG or RPG. Or Wikipedia Manual of style say that we should use Japanese role playing game over JRPG. See this, paragraph 8-3 : http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Square_Enix/Manual_of_style#General_rules

Role-playing game abbreviated as RPG. Even though most editors will likely understand what you mean, Wikipedia is a general interest encyclopedia, and the casual user may not be familiar enough with gaming terminology to make sense of what many of us take for granted.

I will edit all JRPG into Japanese role playing game according to this guideline. Please, do not revert this change. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shawn5150 (talkcontribs) 18:28, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

if it gets reverted, i'll make sure it gets reverted back.Bread Ninja (talk) 18:32, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's a quote. You can't change the contents of a quote. You can link it to Japanese role-playing game, though. Geoff B (talk) 18:56, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
i though shawn was referring to the genre section, if it's from a quote, then add a redirect.Bread Ninja (talk) 19:01, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I was following this guideline : http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia:ACRONYM Always consider whether an abbreviation may be better simply written out in full, thus avoiding potential confusion for those not familiar with it.
Maybe we could do what this page say, http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia:MOSQUOTE#Quotations : Where there is a good reason to make a change, insert an explanation within square brackets.
Maybe we could add Japanese role playing game just after RPG within square brackets.Shawn5150 (talk) 01:41, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You could put JRPG in a hatnote, so if there's any confusion, they can just clikc on it for more understanding of what JRPG means.Bread Ninja (talk) 16:06, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I added wikilinks the terms RPG and JRPG.Shawn5150 (talk) 22:00, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tone ?

[edit]

75.4.240.10 has made huge changes to the Story section with lots of rewrite. I red Wikipedia's guide to writing better articles and I think we can now safely delete the tone warning on this article. If someone has a good reason to keep the tone warning please say it in the Discussion page and I will try to edit the page according to the discussion, otherwise I will delete it in a few days if no ones disagree.Shawn5150 (talk) 22:57, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well i do still some few minor tone issues, but other than that i think it's good to be removed. Anyways, the main problem is length. It's long and detailed, it only needs to inform the main points of the story, any details can be added in the respected characters.Bread Ninja (talk) 23:07, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

major errors in the article

[edit]

i have played the game and, characters cant be chosen before a battle starts. the only character that can attack at the start of the game is Leanne. Zephyr and Vashyron can only jump around. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.208.59.120 (talk) 14:03, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unless I misunderstand you, the Wikipedia article is right here. On the PlayStation 3, you can change the order for battles by pressing the square button in the menu and using the directional buttons to select a character. Press X and then move the cursor to the new position and press X again to confirm. This does NOT change the lead character in the field, just in battles, and whoever is first will start a battle in the middle position. Also, "jumping around" is called hero action and is the way you do attacks (and tri-attacks) in the game. You can also freely assign a handgun or a machine gun to any character so anyone can deal the final damage.Shawn5150 (talk) 13:15, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Planning on reviewing this real soon. GamerPro64 03:05, 5 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

So before going in-depth on the article as there is a lot of Japanese to go through, I want to point out the use of this 1UP link. I do not believe this was written by a staff member of the website and could just be a promoted blog. Just like how Destructoid does that sometimes for userblogs. GamerPro64 22:18, 8 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to be a "featured" blog post on 1UP's The Grind blog feed (see [1]). There seems to be some degree of editorial oversight on this blog feed as it is a "Featured Blog" ([2]), with material by people like Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, and Kat Bailey. I don't know if that qualifies it as a reliable source? Axem Titanium (talk) 19:55, 22 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Might want to take that up at VG Sources on that. Personally I just see it as a userblog but I could be wrong. GamerPro64 01:58, 24 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I put up a discussion there. I'm not terribly committed to the source but it seems like a waste to just delete the whole paragraph. Axem Titanium (talk) 18:15, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like they said it was fine. :) Axem Titanium (talk) 19:52, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

So, for the review itself:

Lead
  • " The game, in contrast to other RPGs of the time, uses a fast-paced strategic combat system revolving around different types of firearms and combination moves between the three playable characters." The part about the combat system being fast-paced doesn't get mentioned expect for the lead. Might be best to add that in somewhere in the body.
Gameplay
  • "Players are able to move about the battlefield freely, but they have the option to create predefined paths for the character to follow. While moving along these paths, characters gain access to Hero actions, which make them immune to damage and speed up charge times." Unsourced.
  • I'm not sure if this source from RPGLand is reliable.
  • Everything but the first sentence in the last paragraph is unreferenced. Also the part about the game automatically starting on "Normal" mode is not in the SiliconEra reference, either.
Synopsis
Development
  • This section is fine.
Reception
  • The article mentions the games sales in Japan. Are there sales for the game outside of Japan, such as the US?
  • The review score for Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine isn't sourced in the score table.
  • I recommend addressing people by their names in the section. You have Bob Mackey from USGamer but not the other reviewers.
    • The original copywriter addressed reviews by their publication, which I had forgotten when I added that sentence from USgamer. I believe WPVG suggests to pick one style (either publication or reviewer name) and sticking with it, so I fixed my addition. Axem Titanium (talk) 19:52, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Legacy
Sourcing
  • Looking at the External Links at the top right, the GameSpot review for the game is dead. Also some of the Sega.jp links don't open up for me so that should also get checked out.

Hi GP64! I was away for the weekend but I'm back! Working on this. Axem Titanium (talk) 16:54, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think you might need to get someone to do a copyedit to the article. Reading this article throughout has me thinking the prose isn't that good. GamerPro64 02:39, 28 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I went through and did another copyediting pass on the rest of the article. Axem Titanium (talk) 19:53, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Finished reviewing the article now so I recommend looking through what I have said and make the right fixes here. GamerPro64 16:06, 5 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, all done! Sorry for the delay. Axem Titanium (talk) 19:52, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
One more thing before this review is finished. The OPM review seems to be from Playstation: The Official Magazine, which is different from Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine. GamerPro64 20:09, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, the review box used the wrong code. Axem Titanium (talk) 00:06, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. I think with that its safe to say this article meets the criteria for GA status. If anyone doesn't agree with this decision you can call for a GAR on it. GamerPro64 03:48, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
