History
[edit]Before my edit this article said that a bill was passed by the House of Assembly on March 25, 1816, which was incorrect. A bill was passed by the Assembly on March 1st which then had to be approved by the Council, the then-existing upper house of the Legislature. The Council then approved the bill with amendments. Because the Council amended the bill, the Assembly needed to approve those changes which it did on March 23rd. The bill then received Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor on March 26th i.e. enactment on March 26th. By the law of that time, upon enactment the Act had retroactive effect to February 8th, the day the session began. Hebbgd (talk) 23:13, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
