Some discussion about the optical characteristics (features/benefits/tradeoffs/limitations) would useful as well as product histories from current manufacturers. Legacy manufacturers could be added but are less of a priority. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.157.181.22 (talk) 19:02, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. So far, the article assumes too much prior knowledge and does not tell us precisely how construction and design differs from a conventional lens, what advances in technology and materials have made it possible for pancake lenses to now produce images of acceptable (if not perfect) quality, and/or why all or more lenses should not be made this way and weren't in the first place? We need to add VR headset use as it is going to be mainstream. There are multiple other non-reflex uses, maybe a title changhe is useful. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.57.250.168 (talk) 06:42, 31 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV?

[edit]

The phrase " providing quality optics in a compact package" is editorializing. Pancake lenses have acceptable but basic corrections. The trade off is wonderful compact design but at the trade off of some sharpness and a tendency to ghost. An allied but non-optical issue is the housing. These are necessarily small and so tiny motors must be used and the speed tradeoffs in AF are a factor. Given that these lenses often have a short throw it's not the end of the world but a factor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.157.176.143 (talk) 18:27, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Use in VR?

[edit]

Pancake lenses are also used in VR - I do not know if they are similar to those described in this article, or is the same name coincidental. If they are similar, then perhaps it would be worth mentioning it. https://vrx.vr-expert.com/the-difference-between-pancakes-lenses-and-current-fresnel-lenses-found-on-vr-headsets/ SimplexPL (talk) 12:27, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Since people predict that there's gonna be an XR boom similar to the AI boom caused by OpenAI, which may result in XR technology becoming mainstream, especially after Apple's involvement, the use of pancake lenses in modern-day VR/MR headsets is absolutely worth mentioning in this article. 67.209.128.127 (talk) 02:04, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
