Subfields
I reorganized this page a bit, and realized there were two paragraphs talking about the major subdivisions of the field. Of course, they are completely different. Are both accurate characterizations? If they are both reasonable but lie along different dimensions, it would be nice if they text explained that.
Thanks. My work can always use editing (and spell checking). I didn't intend to present alternate characterizations of the field, and would never have read what I wrote that way although now that it's been pointed out ... Let me think some on it.

- Are these the actual names of each subfield, or do they have more "official-sounding" names? :-) Can we start writing articles about each? I'm interested in the details of how fossils are prepared and how the shape, diet, morphology etc. of a creature is determined from its remains, especially minimal remains. - Omegatron 17:15, Jan 2, 2005 (UTC)
- I've just added to these and so far they are rather arbitary. 'Work done' varies according to what kind of fossil(s) you are studying, why and how. There's no standard, although field-work, lab work (preparing / processing samples), analysis and data collection, writing up / publication, conservation / management, would be a fair framework. More on History of Paleontology
I think this article could use a section on the history of paleontology. Either that or a link to a separate article on the history of Paleontology. Which do people think would be more appropriate? Rusty Cashman 02:50, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

History uses scientifical methods if you ask me. Either you consider Paleontology as a Science, or you don't. If Paleontology is indeed scientifical, then the only difference is on the objectives of its investigations: to be honest, I don't see the reason why something, because it's "natural", can be considered as scientifical whereas "human" history is not.
As far as i'm concerned, i don't think History is a Science. (I could explain it further... and later)

Of course is Palaeontology a science. No doubt about that. Palaeontology uses scientific methods and is fully interlinked with other fields of science (geology, biology). To be correct, altough Paleontology is a science that refers to natural and ancient history, it is still considered a science. Paleontology uses the scientific classification system and it focuses on ancient biology. Isn't Biology also a Science? Paleontology also strongly uses scientific method and that is why courses in paleontology offer it with lab. For the person to refer history as not a science, is politically incorrect because history falls under the category of scocial science. That's right social science.

Problem with fundamental definition of Paleontology?
A colleague has raised with me an issue with the definition. The definition says "the study of the history and development of life on Earth, including that of ancient plants and animals, based on the fossil record". His contention is that Paleontology is the study of fossil records and their attributes (fullstop) from which inferences may be made as to the history and development of life on Earth. He contends that zoology (or some other ology) is the study of the history and development of life on Earth, and that the limit of Paleontology is the study of the fossil records. He is somewhat correct, but palaeontology includes more than just fossils. To understand the fossil you have to know how it might have died, either naturally or in a land slide etc, type of habitat it could have inhabited, associated fauna. So a good knoledge of rock and soil type, anatomy, taxonomy as well as a predicted temperature of the time etc. So the fossil is only part of the study of palaeontology. Palaeontology is an extremely broad category, different palaentologists specialize in different areas. Some concentrate only on the attributes, whereas others look deeper and into what they represent and draw conclusions about prehistoric life. Palaeontology is basically the study of anything prehistoric. Zoology is purely the study of modern animals, although it is important for a palaeontologist to study zoology in order to gain a further understanding of prehistoric organisms. --Dendodge 20:28, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

- You should probably check out the University of Berkeley, San Diego State, University of California Riverside and UCLA. This is a good page about becoming a paleontologist. For grad school, if you stay with dinosaurs, you will want to check out programs in the Montana or Colorado area as that is where the best digs are. Nowimnthing 18:19, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Is there a difference between Paleontoogy and Geology?

Paleontology is a sub science of geology. Geology is the study of everything on the Earth's outermost layer, the crust. That means that ancient biological life is embedded in the science of Geology. Paleontology is a geological science thats focuses on fossilization when geology is more ambigous of the matter.
Paleontology and Geology are closely related and can never be completely separated since studying fossils gives you information about the history of the rock layers that contain them and vice versa, but I would view Paleontology as also a sub science of biology also. Paleontology is the study of the history of life, and especially in the last century and a half or so has been much concerned with evolutionary theory. Of course you can never really separate the history of life from the history of the earth because, as limestone and coral reefs (among many other things) show they shape each other. Thomas Jefferson
He should not be called a paleontologist like in this article. Someone who just takes an intrest in Paleontology should be refered to as a Paleoenthusiast, not an actual Paleontologist.
I beg to differ. Palæontologists are people that study ancient life. Thomas Jefferson did just that. Although he wasn't a practising palæontologist, he still studied the subject lightly in order to take an interest in it. - Complete lack of a formal career path; uncertainty of tenure even if you're the one in a hundred that gets that far; overall lack of money and poor working conditions; bitchiness between peers over limited grants and publishing space; depression and lack of respect compared with people doing something more obviously useful; having to deal with the fact all your friends who got proper jobs now earn ten times more money than you do... The happiest palaeontologists I know are the amateurs who got jobs as businessmen or doctors or whatever, and then get to go on nice comfortable fossil collecting trips wherever the heck they want without having to fill in a billion grant applications and then publishing a stack of garbage papers to justify things afterwards.
Why is there a zoology info box here?
Why? It seems completely out of place. Also, the text of this article I believe needs a great deal of work. Will anyone be offended if I take a crack at a signficant rewrite?

Spelling differences.

- Actually, it should be Palæontology. Although, you're right, the "correct" spelling is often considered obsolete, the brits translating æ to ae, and the americans to e. Verisimilus T 20:42, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Re-write
With the advent of WikiProject Palaeontology, and Portal:Palaeontology, I have to say that this page would benefit from significant work.
I have recently been shocked by how many intelligent adults don't know the difference between Geology, Palaeontology and Archaeology, and think it would be really useful for this article to present a really basic, yet thorough, introduction to the subject.
As such I would suggest that it should take a "summary style", with each section giving a brief overview of a more detailed article available elsewhere for the interested - a little like Cambrian explosion. I would suggest the following structure, and would welcome comment!
- Introduction: Palaeontology as the history of life. What we study.
- Brief overview of the Evolutionary history of life, including dates and "identifiable" datum points - e.g. Dinos, humans. Focus on berevity of human existance and the vastness of pre-Dino, and pre-animal, time.
- Overview of the available evidence.
- Fossils, with a note on the incomplete nature of the fossil record
- Radiometric dating
- History of Palaeo and Palaeo thought.
Suggestions and contributions welcome!!

Overview of the history of life
There are an awful lot of numbers in the potted history of life; maybe you feel they are essential but I find them overwhelming. You should stick to either numbers or period names throughout; consider "hard parts that fossilize easily until about 548 million years ago. The earliest modern-looking bilaterian animals appear in the Early Cambrian, a" - most readers will have no idea if that is a 10 or 100 million year gap.

- You're right about the scope for confusion. But if we're trying not to confuse non-specialists, dates are more important than names - I remember as a kid being frustrated by all those names whose order I didn't yet know by heart; and I still can't remember boundary dates for the Precambrian eras. IIRC you wanted to emphasise how long the full story is and what Johnny-come-latelys we are.

I take a strong dislike to the phrasing "evolved all over the world" re humans - this suggests to me that they evolved independently all over the world. In a way this discussion is moot - they must have come "out of Africa" at some point, whether or not it was 200,000 years ago.
- No fair partial quote - the full text is "whether modern humans evolved all over the world from existing advanced hominines"! Like it or not, Wolpfoff is still pushing the Mutli-Regional Hypothesis of the transition from H. erectus to H. sapiens. AFAIK No-one disputes that H. erectus originated in Africa, but then colonised Asia from Beijing to Indonesia ("Peking Man" & "Java man"). -- Philcha (talk) 19:29, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

"The fossil record appears to show that the gaps between mass extinctions are becoming longer and the average and background rates of extinction are decreasing." I don't think there's statistical support for this; it's certainly not widely enough accepted for a place in this article. The explanations are very unclear, too.

History of paleontology
The first para of the history section reads like trivia - a collection of unrelated and context-free facts.
- Virtually copied from lead of History of paleontology, a GA. I suspect initial steps in most sciences look that way - I'm familiar with the ancient Greek philisophers from Thales to the Eleatics and Pythagoras an dDemocritus, so've I've seen the fragmentary and speculative beginnings of modern science, which used to be called "Natural Philosophy" (when I was at Glasgow U., that's what the Physics dept was called, and Latin was Literae humaniorum!). -- Philcha (talk) 19:29, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Cladogram
Thanks for taking the time to improve this article. It's a lot less embarrassing now! Just a little niggle re. the cladogram: at the moment it implies that all tetrapods are either amphibians or mammals, and that all amniotes are mammals. - Finding a cladogram that covers a well-known clade, has a ref, is reasonably brief, isn't too specialised but doesn't over-simplifiy to the point of being plain wrong is difficult.
- How much do you know about biostratigraphy? Dating should be the next section, I know only the basic idea of biostratigraphy.

- Hate to be a pain, but the cladogram doesn't sit comfortably with me. I've no easy access to the book, but from my sketchy vertebrate knowledge it looks like the most parsimonious tree is for a single warm-blooded event in the place marked *?*. With any of the others, cold-bloodedness would have to re-evolve. It's just as important to mark the loss of a character as its gain (as I've denoted "xxx").
- Also, it could be simplified a little by removing amphibians, if you wanted.

The source (Cowen) does not include these points; the choice of a point where warm-bloodedness evolved determines where it might have been lost, e.g. if all non-avian archosaurs were cold-blooded then there is no point at which warm-bloodedness might have been lost. In fact the loss of warm-bloodedness only becomes necessary in this cladogram if one adopts the hypothesis that warm-bloodedness arose in basal archosaurs. "Preparation" image
Image File:Europasaurus Praeparation.JPG has been added just below the lead image. I'm not sure this is a good place for it, as it is overshadowed by the lead image. The article is already quite lavishly illustrated by WP standards, and I think adding images would turn it into a WP:GALLERY. Personally I think the preparation image competes with the one that shows a paleontologist looking like a miner as he chips bones out of a rock face - both highlight the amount of hard, unglamorous work required before anyone gets to have fun theorising. --Philcha (talk) 09:39, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Eggs
This edit added "(The spread of life from water to land required organisms to solve several problems, including protection against drying out, supporting themselves against gravity), and hard-shelled eggs, which are sometimes found as fossils". I am undoing it because:
- The logic is very shaky - amphibians, incl some desert species, produce shell-less eggs.
- It's ambiguous, as it's unclear whether it includes the leathery eggs of many reptiles.
- Desiccation and gravity are problems to be solved, but hard-shelled eggs are one possible solution for desiccation.
- This section has to be very concise. The article is about the science of paleontology, and section "Overview of the history of life" merely summarises what has been learned so far - it's effectively a copy of the lead of a longer article (also a GA, i.e. it's been reviewed and approved), which itself has to be very concise. So adding words to deal with the difficulties I mentioned above would give this single aspect of evolution too much space relative to other aspects.
I suggest fossil eggs may find a better home in the article about Amniotes or one of its daughter articles - or in an article about the evolution of eggs. --Philcha (talk) 08:24, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

- That's what the sources say. Possible reasons:
- We haven't found earlier fossils. The Signor–Lipps effect states that, since the fossil record of organisms is never complete, neither the first nor the last organism in a given taxon will be recorded as a fossil.
- Perhaps the actual first land plants were soft and so not fossilised. It seems the first land animals were arthropods, whose exoskeletons could leave tracks (see the source, First steps on land: Arthropod trackways in Cambrian-Ordovician eolian sandstone, southeastern Ontario, Canada) even if the animals' corpses were scavenged or eroded when they died.
- Microbial mats may have been the base of the food chain for the first land animals. Terrestrial bacteria appeared much earlier, possibly 3.1 to 2.8 Ga - see Evolutionary_history_of_life#Colonization_of_land and A genomic timescale of prokaryote evolution: insights into the origin of methanogenesis, phototrophy, and the colonization of land. --Philcha (talk) 09:18, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

- I've looked at this article in Firefox, Internet Explorer and Chrome. If I browse the article, both of these charts display fine for me, with no overlapping. (I'm not saying that their formatting should not be improved). If I click on the charts to try to see an larger version, as I would with a photo, then I lose all of the annotation and only the raw unannotated image (an English Wikipedia copy of the Wikimedia Commons image) is displayed.
