Capacity is bogus. Need Energy Production instead.

[edit]

Energy producers like to brag about capacity, which would be relevant if power plants worked 24x365. But they don't. Wind and solar and coal and hydro and nuclear are VERY different in the uptimes and that impacts the energy produced and the pollution created or averted. From a consumer perspective, a megawatt of nuclear is worth 5 megawatts of solar, because 95% uptime is better than 20% uptime. From a planetary emissions perspective, a megawatt of coal is worse than 1000 megawatts of solar, wind or nuclear, because of the CO2 pollution. From a health perspective... it's even worse for coal as renewables and nuclear don't kill anyone in normal operation, and a coal plant typically kills 100 people per year via air pollution.

Parroting Capacity is marketing. As they say, Horsepower sells cars. Torque wins races. MPG indicates health, climate and economic impacts. So why are we all Horsepower (capacity) and nothing on MPG. There are plenty of good sources showing the production and the pollution of these power plants. CharlesPrice1964 (talk) 05:43, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
