Hello and welcome, we are a group of medical students from Queen's University. We are working to improve this article over the next month and will be posting our planned changes on this talk page. We look forward to working with the existing Wikipedia medical editing community to improve this article and share evidence. We welcome feedback and suggestions as we learn to edit. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cartermcinnis (talkcontribs) 18:12, 1 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome Cartermcinnis, I hope that you can really contribute to this article. I have seen many students from other online university wikipedia courses that did nothing or minimal contributions to the selected wiki articles. I hope that you are the exception. Thanks. Planned Topics to Update/Improve

[edit]

Hello, please see the following suggestions we (Queen's University medical students - Group 13) plan on incorporating:

  • Antibiotics:

Studies have shown that there are no additional benefits in terms of risk of infection, when patients were treated with antibiotics for one day versus three or five days. [1] However, at present, there is only low to moderate evidence for this and more research is needed. [2] Research has shown that the use of absorbable carriers with implant coatings at the time of surgical fixation are effective means of delivering local antibiotics.[3] Thus, there is role for this treatment method in treating open fractures. Please review WP:MEDMOS and rewrite. The use of quotation is not appropriate, as well. Thanks. Jytdog (talk) 19:24, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your feedback Jytdog. I have removed the quotations. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DeeplySuperficial (talkcontribs) 16:56, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Additional students

[edit]

Hello, we are a group of medical students editing this page as part of our class assignment. We have compiled a list of suggestions to improve this article and would appreciate community feedback before we proceed with these edits. Here is a list of our suggestions:

1. We propose to create a section called Prevention. Our proposed paragraph and references can be found in the following sandbox: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/User:Alessandro_L._Ricci/sandbox --— Preceding unsigned comment added by Alessandro L. Ricci (talkcontribs) 19:18, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That is hardly worth adding. We have a whole article on Fall prevention already; if you want a discussion about fall prevention under a Prevention section here, the correct thing to do would be to copy the lead (see WP:LEAD) of Fall prevention into that section, with attribution in the edit note (see WP:Copying within Wikipedia) Jytdog (talk) 19:30, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

2. We would like to rename the Fracture Management section to "Surgical Management".

3. We propose to insert the following statements into the Fracture Management section: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/User:Atyker1/sandbox Atyker1 (talk) 19:33, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I commented in your sandbox. Thanks. JenOttawa (talk) 01:59, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

4. We would like to add the section of "Acute Management": http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/User:Cartermcinnis/sandbox — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cartermcinnis (talkcontribs) 19:36, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please make sure that your citations are consistently placed in the text. They go immediately after the punctuation like this.1 Can you try to use any more lay terms in these suggested improvements? You could try to add some Wikilinks (note: we just link the term the first time it is used in the Wikipedia article). Good work so far! JenOttawa (talk) 02:01, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

5. We propose to update the sections on Negative Pressure Wound Therapy, and wound closure and debridement. We also propose to add a citation that found that the outcomes achieved when using water versus saline are comparable. Another proposed change is to add a sentence about amputation and when it is recommended. http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/User:MaiaIdzikowski/sandbox — Preceding unsigned comment added by MaiaIdzikowski (talkcontribs) 19:51, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for sharing this. I commented in your sandbox.JenOttawa (talk) 00:49, 10 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

6. We propose to update the Aetiology section expanding it to add more causes of open fractures and the types of fractures that could happen. This changes can be found in the following page: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/User:GGutierrez-wiki/sandbox This update should help clarify this section and make it more complete, specially since Aetiology needs to explain causes in relation to the consequences, instead of just a few relevant causes (original articel)GGutierrez-wiki (talk) 00:09, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestions @GGutierrez-wiki:. For citations, please make sure they are consistently placed in the text. They go immediately after the punctuation like this.1 If you have commas your sentence would look like this,1 and like this.2
Thank you for the suggestion I have made the necessary correctionsGGutierrez-wiki (talk) 17:48, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Your paper PMID 28134091 on water vs saline does not meet WP:MEDRS as it is a primary source (prospective hospital-based study of 109 patients). Can you find an article that reviews this (and other studies), a clinical guideline that suggests this practice, or other MEDRS source, or do not add this evidence. Thanks again for all your suggestions. If you have any questions I am happy to help. JenOttawa (talk) 02:10, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi everyone, here are some portions of the article I plan on contributing, looking forward to any insights or comments:
Prognosis/outcomes
History
Society and culture
Signs and symptoms Justin Solarczyk (talk) 17:09, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Peer review:
You have made wonderful contributions to this page! The history section in particular is a joy to read; informative, has good citations, and has a great flow without getting into the weeds. I would love to learn more about poultices per your work plan if that's of interest to you.
For the infection outcomes section, it would be helpful to include the most prevalent bugs that result in infection, and possibly if certain limbs/ areas are more prone to infection. It's very helpful to know that diabetes/ smoking increases infection risk.
Excited to see how much more this page will grow! Lavendermatcha (talk) 04:06, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for this excellent review. I will acknowledge the points you raised.
In terms of poultices, included in the historical section is how the Ancient Egyptians would use a combination of honey, grease, and lint (a form of vegetable fiber). I think its fair to say this could be considered a type of poultice, if not, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
For the infection section, specifically the most prevalent bugs, I have now added information with appropriate references, thank you for bringing this up. But for the limbs or specific areas that may be more prone to infection, although the dat may exist, I have not yet found a suitable reference that keeps with the Wikiproject medicine manual of style, e.g. open access, systematic review, clinical practice guideline.
Thank you again for the great review and suggestions, I'll continue to work on improving and expanding the page. Justin Solarczyk (talk) 22:30, 16 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Image re-location/change?

[edit]

Perhaps the main image shouldn't be too gruesome? I think it does fit the article, but perhaps it could be somewhere a bit further into it, rather than being the main picture. My main issue is that it appears when the link is hovered on from another article, exposing what is essentially gore to an potentially unprepared reader. 31.13.219.134 (talk) 06:15, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am a student working on an assignment to improve this page. I believe this image is a less gruesome way to depict an open fracture.[1] Petermaxc (talk) 22:18, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Following up that I changed the picture. Petermaxc (talk) 18:58, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am planning on making a few edits as part of a class project. I will be updating content throughout the page and adding the various sections: specific considerations for femur and tibia, section on adjunct treatments, and a graphic demonstrating step by step procedure for treating open fractures. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Petermaxc (talkcontribs) 20:25, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
