[edit]Onslow is a town located some 1600km north of Perth, i am not sure what the true distance is, however, i cannot remember, but it certainly is far away, isolated, and unique. When i say isolated i mean that the nearest towns are 490km away in either direction, and the town of Onslow itself is accessible by land in only one single road, a road that is 72km long and; after a driving session of 16 hours, seems to go on forever. The road is also subjected to flooding in the Wet season, and this can leave most Onslow residents confined from leaving there town.
Apart from the wacky location of Onslow on the map, the pilbra region which it lies on leaves you amazed and breath taken at the planes in which it lies on, barren planes, were the complex and sophisticated termite mounds leave you wondering if some kind of extraterrestrial life constructed them, not armies of tiny insects, another enthusiastic feature of Onslow is it's ocean proximity, situated on the coast as it is, fishing opportunities are ripe, and if you are a fishing fanatic then you will love this place, even if you don't like fishing then you can just try it out here, most fishing locations are relatively uninhabited, leaving camping as an added bonus to a fishing trip a real possibility, the scarceness of spots here is not surprising since the total population is just 850.
I Spent a week in Onslow, and it's tranquility is what i admired most, just taking walks out of it's epicenter and into the surrounding area is a real pleasurable experience, if you know the small history facts about this town, you will also gain an added sense of wonder when doing your activities within it, the most notable historical event was the explosion of various atomic bombs by the British Army, directly Off the Onslow coast on the Montebello islands in the Early 1950s. The British were keen to demonstrate there own technological power after WWII, and in order to gain status as an atomic power, along with Soviet Russia And the USA, they needed to detonate and display there Nuclear abilities, the site of Onslow was chosen, not surprisingly because of it's relative uninhabitence nature, many of Britain's top scientists made the trip to Onslow during the testing period, and when the Day finally come, Mushroom clouds lined the atmosphere over Onslow, well not literally, but over the coast and towards the Horizon, if you were, or knew anybody who was within a 300km radius of Onslow during the days in which they launched the tests, they will certainly tell you about the large mushroom clouds that appeared on the Day. For more information on this, I suggest you visit the Onslow museum, like I did during my one-week stay, this museum is extremely impressive for the small size of the Town, and will leave you enlightened on your departure from it's doors.
