[edit]Why is it illegal to grow or make wine from this variety in France?
From web:
"Ah...here, you have to try this..." he said, turning to a smaller barrel, covered in cobwebs. "I've been saving this for more than 10 years. This is made with the 'noah' grape. You know, it's illegal to grow the vines in France and illegal to make the wine. But it's really good."
We tried it.
"Hmmm...Damien, this is very good," we replied.
We drank our glass...continued our conversation...and then thought to ask.
"Why is this illegal?"
"Oh...they say it drives people crazy. I don't believe it. I know plenty of people who drink it. They're not crazy. Well...come to think of it...they are crazy. Every one of them. But it could have been something else that made them that way."
- Varieties of the vine species Vitis labrusca as in this case, or other "American" vine species, are not allowed to be used for wine within Europe (or at least the EU). Only the European vine Vitis vinifera (which should more correctly be called Euroasian, since it is indigenous to the Middle East) and a limited number of hybrids may be used. Technically, it's probably not illegal to grow the vines, it's just that you're not allowed to call the product wine within the EU. Tomas e (talk) 17:40, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
