Perhaps this can get a one sentence mention somewhere on the article? [1]?Calaka (talk) 10:17, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oxford American Dictionary

[edit]

Oxford American Dictionary redirects to this article but it's not clear what the relationship is between that dictionary and the New Oxford American Dictionary. I have a copy. On the title page, it lists

Eugene Ehrlich
Stuart Berg Flexner     Gorton Carruth
Joyce M. Hawkins

New York    Oxford
Oxford University Press
1980

The preface does not add anything useful. Oddly, while it's dated June 1980 implying it's a preface credited for this edition it does not mention that this work is based on The Oxford Paperback Dictionary. It starts out with "This new member of the Oxford family of dictionaries ..." It's signed with the initials of the people on the title page who I assume were the editors.

Pronunciation

[edit]

The article says, "NOAD includes a diacritical respelling scheme to convey pronunciations, in addition to the Gimson phonemic IPA system that is used in NODE." In addition? Shouldn't this be "as opposed to"? The preview I see at Amazon.com (2nd ed.) seems to only show the diacritical system. - dcljr (talk) 04:38, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know about the first two editions, but the third edition states on page xxv that it uses "a simple respelling system." It does not use any IPA symbols. Wahrmund (talk) 00:35, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'm changing the article. - dcljr (talk) 06:06, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
