Merge

[edit]

I propose that the article, Nehru-Gandhi family, be merged with Nehru- Feroze Gandhi family, as the second article differentiates the family tree from Mahatama Gandhi as well, as Gandhi usually suggests a relation with him directly. --Ekabhishek (talk) 07:42, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Qualified Support: It seems daft to have two articles on the same topic however I would suggest that the remaining article be the Nehru-Gandhi family one as that title is the widely used name for the political dynasty. However I would incorporate the best of the other article including the fact that Mahatama Gandhi is not related.

Page move

[edit]

The name in use per most reliable sources is Nehru-Gandhi, not Nerhu-Feroze Gandhi. If the page needs to be moved, then a page move discussion should be started. I've reverted the move for now since Gnews archives and Gbooks support the current title of Nehru-Gandhi family. -SpacemanSpiff 04:22, 25 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Colors

[edit]

It'd be nice if it said somewhere what the different colors in the family tree mean. Tad Lincoln (talk) 10:23, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Who are the other most prominent political families?

[edit]
Resolved

In the article Rahul Gandhi (edit | visual edit | history) · Article talk (edit | history) · Watch, there is one editor with few edits outside of that article who keeps adding Adding "one of" to "the most prominent political family", thereby introducing a grammar error. Even if it weren't for the grammar error, it is questionable how this edit improves the article. It may make sense when the status of most prominent family is contentious, but that doesn't seem to be the case in India. It raises the obvious question: Who are the other most prominent political families? If we can't point to at least some contenders, then I feel the addition is Weasel language that we better do without. — Sebastian 04:08, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Before I start, let me assert that the answers will be highly subjective to the editors opinions. So here's mine. Asssuming we are only talking about the national level, there is only one truly prominent family: the Nehru-Gandhi family. Five generations involved in national politics: three members holding the highest executive office (excluding one who nearly became PM but sacrificed the oportunity, and another one, presumably, in the line); four held leadership of the country's largest party; and others have held prominent posts. No other family even comes close. Other families that come to mind are Karunanidhi's family, Paswan's family Pawars, Sangmas, and Scindias. Most of them though are locally prominent. Thye have some clout in the centre depending on whi is in power. --Deepak D'Souza (talk) 09:35, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with Deepak that it's subjective, but only one family in India has produced three Prime Ministers, and the prominence is well documented by reliable sources, so this shouldn't be an issue. —SpacemanSpiff 22:16, 27 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, guys! BTW, the original issue has been resolved by another editor with the simple and sensible resolution of deleting the half sentence in question altogether.[1]Sebastian 23:10, 27 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Birth name

[edit]

Feroze Gandhi's birth name (Feroze Khan) and how he came to change his name to Gandhi before marrying Indira should be mentioned. His mother's family name was Ghandy.

Archana Vasudevan

Comments on Ms.Archana Vasudevan!'s remarks. Do you know The changes made from Khan to Gandhi was not for marriage,It is not necessary to change any name to marry a Memuna Beegam! {Where Indira Nehru actually changed before her marriage!} But the discussion is unwanted and unnecessary and nothing for good. As I believe that Nothing in a name But History looks what He/She Done For Upcoming generations. In Gujarat Gandhi a surname belongs to a certain community; but (someway) all Gandhi is not related to M.K.Gandhi who lived a great living.Ghandy Is a Parsi surname(not sure) never lesser than any one. Nehru family(parivar) is a model to India never shown any apathy to any religion.Accepted, adopted and accompanied with out any hesitation or hatred.

Dear Wikipedia,

With regard to the Nehru Gandhi family. The information that the 'Surname Gandhi is not related to Mahatma Gandhi' is incorrect. The amendments are required on the page.

The surname Gandhi was given to Nehru family, when Indira Gandhi daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru had decided to marry to different religion person Feroze Khan. Feroze was muslim, however Nehru family was hindu. Due to removing the conflicts, and maintain the social balance in the society. Mahatma Gandhi had given Feroze Gandhi as his own surname, and helped to settle the matter.

The same information is also available at various wikipedia pages. I am enclosing a few of them.

http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Feroze_Gandhi http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Indira_gandhi

Therefore the line: 'Gandhi is not related to Mahatma Gandhi' must be removed.

Thanks.

Regards Deepak K Rana

Citing Wikipedia articles is unacceptable. You need a reliable source... Preferably a scholarly source of some repute. (which btw... since I know for a fact you are propagating rumors, your in for a tough time gathering) --14.97.2.198 (talk) 21:57, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Misinformation about the Nehru-Gandhi family

[edit]

By now, the web has been saturated by misinformation about the Nehru family. Social media has also been saturated by the misinformation. This misinformation is now so pervasive that it is widely believed and has started entering what was once reliable sources - books and newspapers.

A separate article on this misinformation is needed - how it arose and was propagated. Facts countering the misinformation are needed.

In his 2016 book Bertil Falk traces the misinformation about Feroze Gandhi to a stencilled magazine "Young India" Oct 1994. The misinformation about Motilal Nehru was promoted by A. Ghosh, who had migrated to Texas, on his new defunct Sword of Truth website around 2000. Misinformation about Motilal's wife is more recent.

Feroze Gandhi was a Parsi, and Motilal Nehru and his wife were Kashmiri Pandits. However thanks to the misinformation, most younger Indians believe otherwise.
