Suggest merge

[edit]

I suggest Mass gap and Yang–Mills existence and mass gap should be merged together. Reason: both articles are quite short, but Yang–Mills existence and mass gap actually contains more background information. Merging them together should be perfectly possible. 131.111.8.96 01:34, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is not a good idea, in my opinion, because mass gap is much more general than Yang Mills. The article is short because no one has done serious editing on it yet. Mass gap is a fundamental idea in quantum field theory, important for the decay at long distances of correlation functions, while "Yang Mills existence and mass gap" is a problem by some institute.Likebox 03:00, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Likebox. The article defines the term "mass gap". Merging it with the mentioned article seems a bit arbitrary. --88.66.233.175 12:29, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm removing the merge. The mass gap is a basic property of all field theories, not just Yang-Mills. Akriasas (talk) 18:36, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Relation between mass gap and mass defect

[edit]

Does the mass gap relate to a mass defect? I'm not intimately familiar with these concepts, but they seem related. Is mass defect the description of a mass gap within the context of nuclear binding? Is mass gap, therefore, a more general term? 75.139.254.117 (talk) 09:38, 4 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

answering clarifications needed & other major & minor ambiguities

(& fighting a crazy spellchecker on a new device!)

I managed one page edit ok. The next one's got iffy-er: I'm trying to add a footnote

For one of these questions (| modified Mar 2016) (more than a few, some extraneous & unnecessary). This would be for:

A quartic massless scalar field theory develops a mass gap already at classical level[clarification needed].

In the Examples from Classical Theories section. All The classical theories are decently described & delineated by the entire Witten publication cited below.

The Problem Of Gauge Theory Edward Witten (Submitted on 24 Dec 2008 (v1), last revised 3 Jan 2009 (this version, v3))

This article is the written form of a lecture presented at the conference "Geometric Analysis: Past and Future" (Harvard University, August 27-September 1, 2008), in honor of the 60th birthday of S.-T. Yau.

Insult to injury I've lost my UN/PW apparently.

Off to wiki-editting (sic) remedial class....

  • I agree merging pages would increase complexity.
  • Classical mass gap is greater in scope than the Yang-Mills tower
