Initial article building

CaroleHenson, very happy to be collaborating with someone on this article. :) I had seen it yesterday and added the NYT source so it wouldn't get deleted before I had a chance to clean it up I'm not sure the Shining Path poster is the best image for this article. It would seem to have the implication that Gagnon supported them, which was the exact opposite of the case! I'm not really sure what a better image would be though. TonyBallioni, I am ok with having it removed or changing the caption so that it reflects that Gagnon opposed this org. Whatever you think is best.

One thing I thought of adding was a multiple location map with the location of the mission, Tzibokiroato, and any other key locations. Perhaps that would be a viable alternative. What do you think?

I'll remove the image for now. We can add it back later if either of thinks of a better caption. I think the maps would be a good idea. I'm not familiar with how to add them to articles, so I'll follow your lead on that. Something else to keep in mind is that the original creation claimed that he died in March 2017. It doesn't help that the Peruvian branch of the Franciscans website seems about 6 months outdated. The US based ones published monthly obits, and his name doesn't appear there. I think its likely that he did die (the original page seemed like it was going for a memorial to me), but I think under BLP policy we can't claim that. The best way to split the baby is probably to use the past tense in referring to him but not mention the death until we have a source. TonyBallioni (talk) 15:08, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

I've changed the description of the mission to hub. I didn't like seat because that sounds a bit too formal and juridicial, I agree with your reasoning re: home, centrality is fine, but I tend to prefer simpler language when possible. Carole, I was thinking of noming this for DYK, since we have the majority of his life in here and are finishing out the details now. What do you think of the following hooks/do you have any other ideas:

• ...that Mariano Gagnon was a Franciscan friar who organized airlifts to help refugees escape the Shining Path?
• ... that Mariano Gagnon dropped salt and Christmas presents to indigenous people from an airplane while their mission was being attacked by the Shining Path?

I had a thought about nominating the article for GA - it would be good to add information about how he got ammunition to fight off the guerillas. It's mentioned in several articles - and was his take on the moral, religious dilemma.–CaroleHenson (talk) 16:36, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

I emailed the US province's communications office to ask if they could either confirm he was alive so I didn't keep searching, or to point me to a publicly published obituary. Religious orders are pretty good about helping people find information about their members, so I thought it worth a shot.

Yes, I think that would be good. If I recall correctly, the sources just mentioned he got the weapons from the Peruvian government/army. His book would likely go into more detail on the specifics, but that poses the obvious problem of someone self-reporting on their own activities during a war, so we'd have to use it carefully. I think it would be an acceptable use of a primary source to relay his claims about how he viewed the conflict's intersection with his moral and religious views. @Finnusertop: thanks for finding the picture and extracting one of just him from that. I had found it, but was concerned about the personality rights of the others involved. The cropped image is perfect though! Looked through the gallery again, and I don't see many that would fit with the rest of the article. TonyBallioni (talk) 19:00, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

   I think you should rework the last 2 sentences in the first paragraph of the “cutivereni mission” section. Maybe something like…. The Asháninka hunted animals, farmed manioc and other foods…

   The wording of the 4th sentence in the 2nd paragraph of the “internal conflict in peru” section is a little redundant. I suggest you change the last few words to “burned it down” or something similar.

   In the “later years” section, I think you should reword the nomination piece to something like… “he was nominated for an award by Father Eduardo Arens, which he received on May…”

2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
