Birthdays? New Year!

[edit]

I'd like to know where this is used for birthdays. I've never heard it in relation to such. ALWAYS in response to "happy new year" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.42.247.84 (talk) 00:11, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I came to make the exact same comment. Gronky (talk) 18:21, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I can confirm it's used for birthdays in at least some parts of the US Midwest, where it's used the same way for anniversaries. Generally framed as, "Happy birthday, many happy returns!" or, "It's your anniversary, may you have many happy returns!" The only times I've heard it as a response to "Happy New Year" is in media, so maybe regions tend toward using it only as an initial wish or only as a response? 40.131.144.10 (talk) 03:17, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
