unmannered banner

[edit]

Anyone able to decipher why the banner in place does not show on the page, as it does on the page for List of tea companies? (ATTENTION! DO NOT ADD LINKS TO EXTERNAL SITES. DO NOT ADD COMPANIES WITHOUT A WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE. THEY WILL BE REMOVED.) Thanks, AHampton (talk) 19:38, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

AHampton, it's an intentionally hidden comment. The wikimarkup makes it visible to editors but not to casual readers. --valereee (talk) 11:51, 14 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, valereee (talk · contribs)... had figured it out months ago... a necessary banner here! AHampton (talk) 15:58, 14 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
AHampton, I figured, but I hate to leave a question unanswered even if it's that old! :) --valereee (talk) 18:46, 14 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Valereee Since few of my questions obtain direct answers, any response is always appreciated, so keep up the good work! AHampton (talk) 17:53, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This actually is a list of vegetarian and vegan brands, some of which are companies.

[edit]

Not sure how this should be handled. A lot of these brand were once companies, but now they're brands of a larger (non-vegetarian) company. I'm almost wondering if the descriptor ("This is a list of vegetarian and vegan companies that do not use animal products or animal-based products in their goods") can ever actually be considered accurate. valereee (talk) 13:37, 6 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Well noted. AHampton (talk) 16:00, 14 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe the name of this article should be List of vegetarian and vegan brands, to retain a reflection of the earliest company brands. It may be an ideal time to split this list into two articles, one vegan, the other, vegetarian. AHampton (talk) 02:38, 13 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
AHampton, I'd support changing the page name to brands, and splitting out vegan vs vegetarian --valereee (talk) 20:56, 16 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Should it be vegan only?

[edit]

If a company is vegetarian, then it does use animal products, as that is the key difference between vegan and vegetarian. Ascv (talk) 01:31, 24 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Due to historical reasons "vegetarian" is often used as a more generic term encompassing vegans and ovolactovegetarians. However I agree the current writing is confusing. The article should distinguish between strictly vegan and vegan and/or vegetarian companies. --189.62.149.53 (talk) 22:12, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bloated See also section

[edit]

I have removed several items from the See also section, including: List of meat substitutes, List of vegan media, Meat analogue, Plant-based diet, Plant milk, Testing cosmetics on animals, Vegetarian cuisine, and Category:Vegetarian publications and websites.

Per MOS:SEEALSO, "articles linked should be related to the topic of the article" and "The links in the "See also" section should be relevant, should reflect the links that would be present in a comprehensive article on the topic, and should be limited to a reasonable number."

This article's title is "List of vegetarian and vegan companies", NOT "List of vegan foods". It is not appropriate to list a subset of component items that might be on a restaurant menu and certainly not a list of websites or media. That is indiscriminate WP:ADVOCACY. Would you add to (hypothetical list) "List of American car manufacturers" a list of automobile components such as "Tires", "Seat belts", or "Steering wheels"? No, you wouldn't. Therefore these items do NOT belong on this article's See also section.

Categories belong at the bottom of the page, not in the "See also" section. There is already Template:Veganism and vegetarianism on the page. No need to repeat categories AND template components in the See also section.

If you want some of these items in the article because they represent products of individual companies, then link them in the summaries next to their companies — as has been done with several other entries. But they do NOT belong in a See also section.

See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Layout.
