From Talk page whilst in Sandbox
[edit]Seems like a really odd name for a page, have you considered "Island of the OH"? Akerbeltz (talk)
- It would be "List of islands of the Outer Hebrides", which might well be clearer, but "Island(s) of the OH" is in effect just "Outer Hebrides". Ben MacDui 17:53, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
- I have to admit some of these wikipedia titles and category names can get a bit repetitive, e.g. "Islands of the Shetland Islands" and such like. "List of the OH" is better I think. At least it's not "Western Isles" you've used (since that used to refer to all of the Hebrides). The governmental use of "WIs" and "Highland" has really muddied the waters. --MacRusgail (talk) 13:36, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
- Getting ready to go "live" soon. On balance, "List of the OH" seems the simplest solution. Re "Adjectives" below - its intriguing to me that although it is essentially an exercise in Gaelic that there seems to be little in the way of an English equivalent. Folk are "Mullachs" and Sgianathachs"(sp?) in English - outside of the North Isles I don't recall hearing anything more specific than "islander" or maybe "Lewisman" in the sassenach tongue. Ben MacDui 08:12, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
- Shall I edit into your sandbox? There's a few errors in it (islands should all have the -aigh/-eigh spelling, not the -dh spelling) and I think I can supply some more. The equivalant of Gaelic -ach is usually -man/men, Islaymen, Juramen, Skyemen... I have occasionally seen Mullach/Leòdhasach etc used in English texts but very very rarely indeed. Akerbeltz (talk) 12:18, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, please fire away - although I have a suggestion. I am not sure we need adjectives for every last island. Could we start with the inhabited islands only for now? I am not sure I see the point if there are no longer any "Thearnatraighachs" or whatever they were. Ben MacDui 18:35, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
- Well, not every island, but "Hiortach", for example is useful.--MacRusgail (talk) 19:11, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
There isn't one for every last island, only the main ones. At least none that are known widely. Akerbeltz (talk) 20:32, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
- Done the islands. For Uineasan my (old) map has the English form Uinessan. Akerbeltz (talk) 20:55, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
- OK - thanks, and I'll check that out. Do you have a ref for "An t-Eilean Fada" meaning L+H rather than the whole chain? It would be useful for the main article as well. Ben MacDui 06:14, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
- LOL I hate it when people ask for refs for stuff so "obvious" cause I can never think of one but sure, I'll dig one up and add it :) Akerbeltz (talk) 13:03, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
I need to kick my old teacher... I have been using this wrongly for years it would seem. It IS all of the Hebrides, not just L&H... my bad, sorry. Akerbeltz (talk) 13:54, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
- OK - thanks for looking - it remains the "island with no name". Ben MacDui 18:22, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Adjectives
[edit]If you look at one of my sandbox pages here - User:MacRusgail/Sandbox4 - which is a bit messy and has been abandoned for a while, you'll see that I've included a column for adjectives for the islands, where necessary. Can I suggest that this is included in this article as well? These terms double as the names of someone from the particular island as well. I haven't done much for WPSI recently, but this ought to be helpful. Users such as Akerbeltz will be able to provide even more...--MacRusgail (talk) 13:36, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
- There are only two or three applicable names in the sandbox - if a few more can be provided I can take a look at this. Ben MacDui 17:13, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Area estimates
[edit]For the record, Torogaigh (Sound of Harris east) and Vuia Beag were both estimated at about 20 ha i.e. too small for the "main list". Ben MacDui 15:15, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Redirect
[edit]Should The Western Isles and The Long Isle redirect here? And if they do, should those terms be bolded in the text. Colin°Talk 12:18, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Western Isles redirects to Outer Hebrides. "Long Isle" isn't much used these days, but again, if created it would redirect to Outer Hebrides rather than here. I really don't know what is going on with the bold thing. Apparently current protocol at WP:FLC discourages it, but as this would seem to be in contravention of WP:BOLDTITLE. I intend to try and find out when the FLC is over. Ben MacDui 18:51, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Map
[edit]Shame the map (File:Hebridesmap.png) doesn't enlarge to be readable. Can someone create a better one with higher resolution or SVG? Colin°Talk 12:18, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Smaller islands section reorganisation
[edit]Prior to today's date the "Smaller islets and skerries" section was organised by alphabetical order of the larger island they were closest to. In a single edit today I have re-organised this so that they are listed by geography, from south to north. This is more useful as it is easier to find islands that are in complex clusters.
