Locations?

[edit]

Are these links supposed to point to discussion of the sites, or to the general area where finds were located? Kortoso (talk) 18:42, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am trying to straighten out this list of links; it's apparent that this was copied from somewhere else.
It may make more sense to have a proper table. And categories of "protoneanderthal" and the like, these are not defined anywhere that I can see. I'd rather associated them with estimated dates and culture, since these are more available and possibly more meaningful.

Suggestions

[edit]

1. The designations Classic Neanderthals, Protoneanderthals, and Transition Neanderthals are unreferenced and undefined. Classic Neanderthal refers primarily to a set of traits used by paleoanthropoligists as part of a checklist to determine whether a fossil is Neanderthal. Some fossil are indeed labeled "classic Neanderthal" so maybe this one could stay. I think Transition is an obsolete term from the mid-20th century. Protoneanderthal is not widely used.

2. It would be nice if we had something about which sites have yielded DNA. Some of the details we could include: complete genome, partial, complete mtDNA, etc. Og course this could go in the fossil list, so I'm not sure.

3. The two maps we have now don't show some of the most important site further east, e.g., Uzberkistan, Altai Mountains This one doesn't show specific sites, but is more complete: File:Range of Neanderthals in the Levant.png.
