This is a solid little split-out from the main Mary Robinson article. A few comma and consistency issues, alt text and archived references and you will be good to go. 7-day hold, Xx78900. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 22:55, 6 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for looking at this! I'm currently away, but I should have the time to make these changes by Thursday. Cheers! Xx78900 (talk) 07:08, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Copy changes

[edit]
  • Would like to see a citation to end the paragraph In 1965, Bourke won a scholarship to attend Trinity's Law School. (this will make it easier for a possible DYK nomination)
Done It was from the following citation, I try to keep repeated citations to a minimum, but I can see now that using a print source for something after a paragraph break is unclear. Moved it up.Xx78900 (talk) 22:12, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • it was at Harvard that she "learned that law is an instrument for social change." Period before quotation mark for a sentence fragment: see MOS:LQ. (There's another quote later on that this is correctly done for a full sentence with the period inside.)
Done Full stop moved. This is a brilliant one! I completed a masters degree in English and never came across this rule, always happy to be learning grammar.Xx78900 (talk) 22:12, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • That year, she graduated with a B.A. and an LL.B., and was awarded first-class honours in both. The comma after LL.B. is not needed: see User:Sammi Brie/Commas in sentences for an explainer (there's no complete sentence after ", and").
Done as above, this is a great rule to learn. Thank you for pointing them out!Xx78900 (talk) 22:12, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Don't italicize Seanad in use. Per MOS:FOREIGNITALIC, A proper name is usually not italicized.
Done Changed, both here and on Seanad Éireann career of Mary RobinsonXx78900 (talk) 22:12, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • First paragraph in "Legal and academic career" needs more sentence variety (lots of "In (year)" to start...).
Half done I tried to mix it up but I'm not confident in how the new version reads, I think it seems a bit vague and I'm not sure how to give it more clarity. Any thoughts?Xx78900 (talk) 22:12, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Robinson retired from practicing law in February 1990, when approached by the Labour Party to run as their candidate to the presidency of Ireland Remove this comma OR change to "when she was approached..." and keep the comma. As it is now, there is no subject in the back portion of the sentence.
 DoneXx78900 (talk) 22:12, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • ...an inalienable right to privacy, and that customs officials had breached this right by intercepting and confiscating their post Remove comma. Latter half is a dependent clause.
 DoneXx78900 (talk) 22:12, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • women could not be compelled, and had to apply to be put on the jury list Remove comma.
 DoneXx78900 (talk) 22:12, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Be consistent on commas after "In (year or month/year)".
Half done I made them all consistent in that they are all now followed by a comma, but I'd be most comfortable if you'd take another glance to see that they're correct. Thanks!Xx78900 (talk) 22:12, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • , and at the time the Irish state I'd change to ; at this time, the Irish state to remove unwieldy comma structure.

Source spot checks

[edit]

I selected six citations at random to spot check.

  • [2] AGF on Horgan 1997
  • [7] Mentions education at King's Inns. Mark as dead; TCD has a new chancellor.
 DoneXx78900 (talk) 22:16, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • [18] AGF to O'Sullivan
  • [22] 1973 New York Times article mentions Robinson: The bill is being presented by Senator Mary Robinson, who is professor of constitutional law at Trinity College, Dublin.
  • [24] AGF to O'Sullivan
  • [25] Irish Times story mentions Robinson's involvement: It was also a personal triumph for then Senator Mary Robinson, who handled the case before the court in Strasbourg aided by Dublin solicitor Mr Brendan Walsh.

Other

[edit]
  • Earwig turns up little more than common formulations ("She was a member of..." and organization names.
  • Images are properly licensed and appropriate, but they need alt text. Done
  • Archive references with IABot.
Not done I tried to work this bot, but I haven't done so before and after logging in with my Wikimedia account it says I have insufficient permissions to use the bot. I'm really not very tech-literate so I'm not sure what to do about that.Xx78900 (talk) 22:24, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The bot has been spotty of late, so I'm running this for you now. I know I had issues a few days ago. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 22:08, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
