Evolution?

[edit]

I know Wikipedia has a certain bias, but I think even the most [citation needed]-ing regulars would agree that a plant growing poorly in poor soil, and producing poor fruit as a result, does not qualify as evolution. We're talking about under a century for God's (oh sorry, Science's) sake. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.72.206.153 (talk) 01:35, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Citrus trees are clonally propagated, so they do not evolve at all. This apocryphal story is passed along by the distillers for marketing purposes. This Citrus aurantium cannot "evolve" from a Valencia, an entirely different species (Citrus sinensis). It could easily be a seedling or ramet of some other sour orange (Citrus aurantium), a species that was commonly propagated in the Mediterranean and Carribean.
