Is there a systematic mistranslation in this article?
[edit]- The official Lübeck region church body became a destroyed church (German: zerstörte Kirche), since it was taken over by Nazi-submissive German Christians, who gained a majority in the synod by the unconstitutional election imposed by Hitler on 23 July 1933. However, its land provost (leading cleric) maintained a rather neutral position, so Nazi opponents of the Confessing Church could act within the official church body.
I just read this text in the table of churches, and realised there is probably a systematic error. All previous churches in which the Confessing church retained controlled said "Nazi opponents of the Confessing Church could act within the official church body", and I supposed this meant that Nazis were still active in the official church body despite it being an official confessing church. However, with this text such an interpretation makes no sense.
I now believe it does not mean "Nazis who oppose the Confessing Church could act within the official church body", but "Confessing Church members who oppose the Nazis". This is a highly implausible interpretation of the English.
Could someone please confirm that this is incorrectly written?
