On the subject of his family

[edit]

Are we certain that the other ladies were "Concubines"? Although a man had one chief wife (often called a Primary Consort), he could also take multiple junior wives (often called Secondary Consorts), having married them in the same fashion and ceremony as the Primary Consort. A Concubine in Heian times refers to a woman serving in a nobleman's household, whom he has taken as a "sort of lesser Mistress", as Royall Tyler in his Tale of Genji puts it. Are we sure all of these lovers were servant women? 2600:8800:2280:2D1B:1499:F3FF:FEA4:6001 (talk) 01:21, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
