The result of the move request was: no consensus. It looks like the naming of football players with mononyms may need a broader conversation. (non-admin closure) Bradv 14:20, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
Everton Kempes dos Santos Gonçalves → Kempes (Brazilian footballer) – per WP:COMMONNAME, this person was known as Kempes in reliable sources. Hack (talk) 01:41, 1 December 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose. This name appears in 10 Wikipedias, all of which refer to Kempes by his full name, including his own native language Portuguese Wikipedia. —Roman Spinner (talk)(contribs) 06:04, 1 December 2016 (UTC)
- Comment - how does that comment address the English Wikipedia naming conventions? Hack (talk) 07:31, 1 December 2016 (UTC)
- Unless it is confirmed by linked references that Kempes was exclusively known in the English-speaking world solely by his shortened surname, we should rely on the sources from his native language as well as other international reporting. —Roman Spinner (talk)(contribs) 07:57, 1 December 2016 (UTC)
- Excluding Wikipedia as a reliable source, the vast majority of the reportage for this person prior to this week refers to him as "Kempes", followed by "Everton Kempes".[1] [2] Hack (talk) 08:27, 1 December 2016 (UTC)
- Because of his lengthy name, he was frequently referenced as "Kempes", analogously to many other sports figures who have also been referenced by a mononym. In team rosters, however, as well as in references such as Soccerway, which lists him as "First name Everton Kempes Last name dos Santos Gonçalves, he is referenced by the full name. In Soccerway's main title header, he is listed as "Kempes", but many other players are also listed by mononyms. This pattern is repeated at other sites and references. —Roman Spinner (talk)(contribs) 10:05, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

- Support - Brazilian footballers are generally known by a mononym, and looking at the sources this guy is no exception. WP:COMMONNAME applies. — Amakuru (talk) 11:03, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose. Ambiguous links to mononymic footballers are a nightmare to sort out, even in the more obvious cases. Name the guy by his full name, and redirect the mononym to it (for now - until another Brazilian footballer or two adopts the same mononym, when a DAB page might be in order). Narky Blert (talk) 23:31, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
- I must have flagged at least a dozen, if not two dozen, Brazilian footballer mononyms in Wiki articles as {{disambiguation needed}} because all entries in both English and Portuguese Wiki were clearly about someone else with the same mononym. A hypothetical (but not impossible) consequence of this move would be to point references to obscure expat Brazlian players in the Saudi Arabian 3rd or Thai 4th Divisions into this important article. I've seen similar. Narky Blert (talk) 23:50, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
