Relation to Clive Tyldesley?

[edit]

Are Ernest and Johnny Tyldesley related to Clive Tyldesley in any manner? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.184.129.60 (talk) 07:35, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting question. Doubtful. --Old Lanky (talk) 19:36, 27 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"John Tommy"

[edit]

If Cardus called him "Johnny" Tyldesley that should settle it, I suppose. But when I was watching Lancashire at Old Trafford in the 1950s, the old men on the terraces who could remember him always called him "John Tommy" Tyldesley. I never heard him referred to or saw him in print as "Johnny" until Wikipedia - and the press is capricious. I once saw a Guardian report comparing Glenn Chapple, who God preserve - to a"modern Brian Statham" - written by someone who had clearly never seen Brian Statham, or Dick Pollard whom Glenn Chappell closely resembles - not least in staying power. If you are relying on the Cardus obituary, it would nevertheless be worth checking. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.195.33.206 (talk) 16:34, 5 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A day or so later I tried Googling "John Tommy Tyldesley'. I recommend the experiment. After it, any editor would be tempted to have second thoughts about "Johnny Tyldesley" as the right way to refer to a great cricketer.93.96.231.103 (talk) 22:03, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I've read all of this, looked at the Google finds and spoken to an old chap I know who is a lifelong Lancashire fan. There is no doubt he was known as "John Tommy" in the same way that John B. Hobbs was known as "Jack". The clincher for me is that Lancashire CCC call him John Tommy and, with due respect to Cardus, Lancashire are a firmer authority for their own players than he could have been.
I'll raise the discussion at WT:CRIC before doing anything as I think there may be some interest there. Great stuff, though, and have you thought about joining the site as a member of the WP:CRIC project? All the best. Jack | talk page 06:27, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
