Additional information needed
[edit]1. Details of his Rhodes/Oxford studies?
2. Details of his time as president of Kentucky Wesleyan College.
3. Family life----Wife's background? How many children? Names? We have found internet evidence of a John James Tigert VI, presumably his grandson, but we have not been able to connect the dots.
3. Need greater details regarding his 7 years as U.S Education Commissioner, including specific policies and accomplishments.
4. Need greater details of his involvement with the NCAA's creation of the grant-in-aid.
5. Need details of his Indian higher education consultant work.
6. What specific classes did he teach as a college professor?
If you have additional details or references, please add them to the article or contact the undersigned. Thanks. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 14:04, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Kentucky men's basketball conference records
[edit]Obtained by comparing the schedules at www.bigbluehistory.net (1913 1916 1917) to the list of SIAA members given at Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (yes, I know that Wikipedia is not a reliable source). If anyone else has a better way to get this information or more reliable sources, have at it, but that's where I got those numbers. cmadler (talk) 14:49, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
Damn, Cmadler. You've been doing it the same way I have for SIAA football records! I was hoping you had something better. Oh, well, great minds think alike, eh? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 15:19, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
- Likewise for the football records, using the College Football Data Warehouse. I did confirm that Kentucky Wesleyan was actually independent in football when he coached them. cmadler (talk) 15:54, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
All-Southern
[edit]I believe he was Vandy's first All Southern player. Perhaps that's why their fact book erroneously says they were members of the southern conference since 1903. John and teammate Bob Blake were both Rhodes Scholars, often the fact relayed about that team. Cake (talk) 18:47, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- Nope, John Edgerton was first; or John Dye before him. The year after Edgerton, Tigert and Bob Blake were the first pair of Vandy players to make All-Southern in the same year. Cake (talk) 04:31, 29 November 2014 (UTC)
- But it seems Tigert could well be the first composite selection. If I could find one for 1903, but I think Heisman and Tichenor were about as reputable as it gets for single voters. Cake (talk) 15:14, 11 December 2014 (UTC)
- Just so you see I am not pulling it out of my butt. Here on page 70 lists Tigert as first. Tulane University Football Program; Tulane vs. Vanderbilt

Wife background
[edit]Could one elaborate on what he is looking for when he says her background? She was from Chicago, where they were married. I wonder her relation to Holland Nimmons McTyeire. He's probably the biggest religious/methodist figure in Vandy's history. Cake (talk) 09:12, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
- Tigert was the grandson of Bishop McTyeire; Tiger's mother was the Bishop's daughter -- there is an explanatory footnote in the article. As far as I know Tigert's wife, Edith Jackson Bristol, was not his cousin and was not related to the Bishop. On the wife, we have very little background. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 16:29, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
- Pardon me for missing it in the footnote! Very cool relation though; having the blood of McTyeire is about as Vandy-rooted as it gets. I am sure the wife was from Chicago, an interesting note perhaps given what is said about the reforms at Florida mimicking those at Chicago. Check the program Tigert wrote up for the dedication of Stoll Field. Some great info, pictures, etc. I got a real chuckle of Tigert in his old Vandy sweater coaching up the Wildcats (page 13). UF's digital collections has a fantastic old picture of Tigert at Vanderbilt if you haven't seen it.Cake (talk) 10:31, 10 August 2015 (UTC)
- I had not seen that particular photo of Tigert in his letterman's sweater, but I have seen very similar shots. Tigert was certainly a stud in 1903, but it's pretty clear they didn't spend much doing bench presses in the early 1900s. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 20:08, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
- Here is Tigert watching a game at Florida Field with the wife and Duncan U. Fletcher and Doyle E. Carlton. Look for the bald head. Cake (talk) 05:43, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
