Secondary sources reporting win

[edit]

This is nothing to do with being declared elected, it is simply confirmed by secondary sources that Joe McGirr is the new member for Wagga Wagga, effective from the date of the by-election. Onetwothreeip (talk) 06:46, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A by-election outcome is only recognised when the result is declared by the returning officer. Let's see what others think. WWGB (talk) 07:20, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, he's the MP. Declarations take weeks even for seats where someone wins 60% primary, and we should prioritise clearly communicating undisputed facts - otherwise after federal elections we would go weeks without recognising any seat results despite 90% being known already. In this case, no one disputes that McGirr has won, we have multiple reliable sources to that effect, and he assumed office on the day of the by-election. By who? Our policy is to adhere by secondary sources, particularly reliable news websites in politics articles. WP:PRIMARY, WP:SECONDARY. Onetwothreeip (talk) 07:59, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The Electoral Commission of New South Wales (NSW EC) can only declare the result and so far it has yet to be completed and at this stage even McGirr has publicly stated in the media that he isn't going to be celebrating until the result is declared. Antony Green is a fantastic political analyst but he isn't the NSW EC but we can state that he believes that McGirr has won. Bidgee (talk) 08:27, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nobody here wants to say that the electoral commission has declared him as elected. All we are doing, as has been done in every other Australian election, is say that he is the new MP because reliable secondary sources say so. This is no longer simply Antony Green saying he thinks McGirr will win, McGirr has won, and this is reported by multiple sources other than ABC alone. (PS in at least the last few hours McGirr has accepted his victory.) Onetwothreeip (talk) 08:44, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
