NPOV tag
[edit]I just inserted the NPOV tag into the article. In the 5th paragraph, it is mentioned that he brutalized his slaves. This is a very powerful word, and while I don't speak French very well, the source doesn't seem to mention brutalizing, but merely his ownership of slaves (abhorring as that may be). In response to the preceding objection, I want to quote from J.B. Labat's Travel Account: Voyage aux Isles (1693-1705), which will remove all doubt about his cruelty towards his slaves. This scene describes Labat's beating of one of his slaves accused of witchcraft: "Je crachai sur sa figure et la rompis à coups de pied ... Je fis mettre le sorcier aux fers après l'avoir fait laver avec une pimentade"(I spat on his face and kicked it open ... I had him put in the iron after I had him washed with hot chili-pepper) (Phébus libreto, Paris, 1993, p. 118). Père Labat's memoirs are full of these scenes describing the pleasure he took in beating his slaves. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 170.140.21.71 (talk) 18:13, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
