Toby Stephens is listed as the actors currently portraying James Bond since 2008. This cannot be true as only Daniel Craig is the current portrayer of James Bond. Toby Stephens was a bond Villain, never James Bond himself. 99.241.146.230 (talk) 04:44, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Not done: According to the article Stephens has played Bond on four occasions. Betty Logan (talk) 05:05, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Portrayed by list

There are people credited with playing bond that I can't confirm by their filmographies. George baker and Toby Stevens for instance. When did they have the roll of 007? Jwissick(t)(c) 05:18, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

I just googled it, Baker dubbed over Lazenby's voice for the scene where Bond imitates his character in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and Stevens played Bond in a BBC Radio 4 version of Dr No. —Flax5
It's also listed in the article, in the appropriate sections, with the supporting references. A text search should point the way. - SchroCat (talk) 17:52, 8 September 2015 (UTC)

"films" in the infobox lists just 2 arbitrary films -- why not list all? (or at least remove altogether to not be misleading) 2620:0:1045:1:98F1:F14D:B9F2:BA75 (talk) 11:57, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Spy-fi

An editor is repeatedly adding the Category:Spy-Fi category to the James Bond articles, as evidenced at James Bond, Goldeneye and Moonraker.

I have repeatedly pointed out to Taeyebaar that categories on pages must be supported by sourced content within the article per WP:CATDEF. The editor in question has repeatedly added this category without obtaining a consensus despite my opposition in the edit summaries. WP:BURDEN clearly states "The burden to demonstrate verifiability lies with the editor who adds or restores material, and is satisfied by providing a citation to a reliable source that directly supports the contribution". The editor has repeatedly failed to provide citations for adding this content to the article, instead referring me to Spy-fi, a largely unsourced lists of films. Apart form the fact that Wikipedia articles cannot serves as sources for other Wikipedia articles per WP:CIRCULAR, I believe the article even fails to establish that "spy-fi" is a legitimately recognized genre. The term seems to be a "buzz phrase" that traces back to this The Incredible World of Spy-fi: Wild and Crazy Spy Gadgets, Props, and Artifacts from TV and the Movies, a book that looks at gadgets in spy films. The article does not present any authoritative sources from film writers or scholars that discuss "spy-fi" as a genre. I believe the article is ill-conceived and the catgeory is propagating this ill-conception.

I am going to remove the categories and once more, and ask Taeyebaar one last time to to obtain a consensus for his edits. Betty Logan (talk) 22:14, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

  • I've seen it used once, and only in a joking form, rather than anything serious. If there is a new genre under the name (and hopefully the English language isn't going to be degraded that far) then there sould be many references from industry and academic sources to point to, in which case we'll reflect that. Until then, we can't just make up classifications as and when we want to. – SchroCat (talk) 22:29, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

At least half the sources I added to the Spy-Fi article cite james bond as an example. I can't understand Betty Logan's problem here.--Taeyebaar (talk) 23:05, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

Please don't personalise this with a personal attack. There is little of benefit in the links on that article: fan sites, peer sites and the unreliable IMDB are not a good basis. Can you provide official industry sites or academic references which we can use to analyse the claim? – SchroCat (talk) 23:11, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
I never attacked anybody, and yes I added multiple sources right out of google scholar, more than reliable.--Taeyebaar (talk) 23:51, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
"I can't understand Betty Logan's problem here" is a personal attack, and you'd be advised to stick to discussing the substantive point in hand, rather than such personal comments. As above, what official industry sites or academic references can you provide? (Just saying a form of Google search is not enough: can you give individual references to be examined?) – SchroCat (talk) 00:01, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
The article on goldeneye introduces it as the seventeenth spy-fi film, meaning it acknowledges all the previous James Bond films as spy-fi and is rated a good article on Wiki, so where am I wrong? To repeat, the intro already calls it a spy-fi film, the seventieth spy-fi film, meaning my edit on moonraker was justified per the sources on spy-fi and the intro on Goldeneye ranked as a good article. --Taeyebaar (talk) 00:31, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
Which conveniently appeared in the article this last December, nine years after it was promoted. Betty Logan (talk) 01:01, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
That IP is definitely not mine. I have not made edits as the pages the IP did in a long time. But I still think it's a valid edit because the sources clearly support James Bond being a spy-fi franchise because it clearly mixes science fiction with spy-fiction. --Taeyebaar (talk) 02:02, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
Yup it's definitely not mine. It traces back to Israel, continents away from where I live. And I already explained I haven't anything about comic book genres in ages. But still, that edit is 100% legitimate and the article is rated a good article.--Taeyebaar (talk) 02:07, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

Either way, "SPY-FI" is a contraction of the correct term SPY FICTION. We cover this at [[Category:Spy fiction]], and the lazy shortened form need not be bothered with. – SchroCat (talk) 11:57, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

Danger Man

This page should reference the 1960 British spy series Danger Man. Ian Fleming was involved in it's creation, many of the guest stars, like M and Q made appearances, and the character introduces himself as "Drake....John Drake." Refs may not be The New York Times, but they are not WP:SPS. PLawrence99cx (talk) 20:35, 11 June 2016 (UTC)

Danger Man evolved out of an earlier - pre-Eon - attempt to adapt Bond for British TV, but Fleming dropped out at a very early stage. Having actors in common is a bit of a stretch, since more film actors at the time also did a hell of a lot of TV work. Nick Cooper (talk) 20:56, 11 June 2016 (UTC)
I have no views on the nature of the claim, but http://danger-man.co.uk/index.asp looks very much like a fansite to me, which qualifies it as WP:SPS. The site does not seem to be officially linked to the show or the broadcaster so how is it a WP:Reliable source? If you can clarify the authorship of the website then it would be much appreciated. Hatnote

That they have the same name and that the ornithologist is mentioned in particular does not necessarily mean that the ornithologist was this one's namesake. The ornithologist could just have been another famous James Bond with no real relation to this one, and putting in ‘and the eponymous character's namesake’ makes it quite clear that he wasn't. Esszet (talk) 19:50, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

Such details are best mentioned in the article(s) proper rather than a redirect. DonQuixote (talk)
Not really, it's not excessive, and it's somewhat misleading as it is. Esszet (talk) 20:08, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
How is it misleading when it doesn't actually say anything? And if you click on James Bond (ornithologist), the first thing stated is that the character of James Bond (which isn't this article) is based on him. Also, the ornithologist is mentioned, with due weight, in Creation and inspiration. DonQuixote (talk) 20:18, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
Personally I don't think there is any need to include the ornithologist in the hatnote since I doubt a huge number of readers will be searching for that particular article, so just relying on the disambiguation page is sufficient in his case, but I agree that the hatnote is not misleading as it stands, as in a reader is not likely to mistake the link for the filmography or literary articles. Portrayers

Toby Stephens is listed as having portrayed Bond, but he was only villain Gustav Graves... assuming they're might be others listed as portrayers who weren't, I mean the point of having a "portrayers" list under Bond is to say who's portrayed... Bond? For a protected page it would seem someone has gotten away with misinformation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.162.203.152 (talk) 18:12, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

Toby Stephens played James Bond in the BBC adaptations of Dr No, Goldfinger, From Russia With Love and On Her Majesty's Secret Service. This page is about James Bond in general, not just the Eon produced films, which is why you have the likes of David Niven and Barry Nelson in there too. Edit warring over film dates

Mysterious Editor, could you please stop edit warring and actually read WP:BRD and WP:STATUSQUO. This article is an overview of the subject, so ephemeral details are not necessary - that’s what the other pages are for. As the Bond films are not all solely British, or have all had their premieres in the UK, it’s a false note to add to the table. The years are entirely sufficient to give the information. – SchroCat (talk) 19:07, 21 September 2018 (UTC)

The day and month release dates are not necessary on this article. This article just gives a general overview of the James Bond property and the years are sufficient for that purpose. It's all we have for the books and there is no reason to treat the films differently to the books. Betty Logan (talk) 19:52, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
There is absolutely nowhere that displays the release dates, meaning viewers have to click on the individual movie pages themselves. Can this be rectified anywhere? TheMysteriousEditor (talk) 20:59, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
What for? - SchroCat (talk) 21:00, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
Erm, same reason anything else is displayed on Wikipedia, and the reason this website exists? To inform people of information. TheMysteriousEditor (talk) 21:14, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
But for what purpose? Information is put in tables to be able to compare and contrast a number of similar fields. If you ignore the years, what are people going to be comparing or contrasting in terms of the actual dates? And why just the UK? There have been US, French, German and Japanese production companies involved (from memory). Not all the premieres have been in the UK, so you'd be comparing irregular information in many places. "To inform people of information" is pointless if the information is out of context or misleading. - SchroCat (talk) 21:31, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
I'm going to agree with SC here. This page is meant as an overview. It doesn't need to have specific info. That can be included on each film's page. SonOfThornhill (talk) 12:13, 22 September 2018 (UTC)
I concur with the other editors above. Exact dates are only useful when they provide a valid point of comparison. Like it or not the Bond films are no longer purely British movies and having the British release dates is not really comparing things in a useful manner as it means different things for different movies. Just stick with the regular year of release. Details are for specific articles, not general articles. Canterbury Tail talk 12:53, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

film Bond's guns: the ArmaLite AR-7

Bond was famously was given an ArmaLite AR-7 in a special attache case in From Russia With Love. Apparently the AR-7 was still in use by Q Branch in On Her Majesty's Secret Service since Bond, in the pre-title sequence, has one in his Aston-Martin's glovebox. Change "In 1956" to "In 1958"

In the section about James Bond on radio, change "1956" to "1958". The line reads: "In 1956 the novel Moonraker was adapted for broadcast on South African radio, with Bob Holness providing the voice of Bond.[100]" However, a new book about James Bond called The Many Lives of James Bond by Mark Edlitz proves that the production was performed in 1958 and not 1956. Page 148 of The Many Lives of James Bond includes a copy of the actual contract, which is signed by Holness. OrsonHumbolt (talk) 21:43, 17 November 2019 (UTC)

Not done for now: It is best if you give a source that we can clearly see as you claim that it is in a book, but I have no means of accessing that book and cannot trust if it is reliable or not. The current source provided doesn't look like a WP:RS nor does it mention any date, so I would support a change if you can prove that it is 1958. Original intention

I'd hoped there would be info on how Bond became a series character. Specifically I'm wondering if it's known whether writing sequels to Casino Royale was Fleming's idea or the publisher's. To me that first novel seems self-contained and not meant to generate a sequel. Don G Taylor (talk) 11:32, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

He wrote Live and Let Die before Casino Royale was even published so I suspect writing a series of novels was Fleming's intention. It certainly wasn't the publisher's suggestion because they disliked the book. Betty Logan (talk) 11:48, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

Additional individual who served as inspiration for James Bond 007

Hello,

I recently returned from Portugal and was told of Serbian double agent, Duško Popov, who served as inspiration for Bond. More specifically, the large wager portrayed in Casino Royale was attributed to him as an actual event that happened at Casino Estoril. I was so fascinated that in fact I went on to read Into the Lion's Mouth by Larry Loftis which confirmed this. Please add Duško to the list of individuals that served as inspiration for Mr. Bond. Thanks. Citation:

FWIW - Seems the basis of all James Bond FILMS may have been the silent 1928 film "Spione" by German director Fritz Lang;[1] the literary basis of James Bond SPY NOVELS may have been William Le Queux;[2] and - an even earlier 007 James Bond, in 1597, apparently was John Dee[3] - Hope this helps in some way - iac - Stay Safe and Healthy !! - Drbogdan (talk) 17:04, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

Bond Behind the Iron Curtain

The citation to the 2021 book, Bond Behind the Iron Curtain by James Fleming was removed by User:CH Ahens. using "notability" as the reason. I read the book. It is new translated information by a reputable publisher. User:CH Ahens clearly has not reviewed the book.Kmccook (talk) 18:59, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

Reverted deletion again. K Geaham (talk) "Doesn't look notable" means you have not looked at the book. It is a series of essays translated from nations that were behind the Iron curtain about James Bond. Pls. read the book before you delete the reference. This is new information about how Bond was received in multiple countries prior to the end of the Soviet Union in 1991.Kmccook (talk) 00:30, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

Two editors who have not read the book have decided it is not notable for no reason except their opinion. Maybe they do not understand that prior to 1991 there was not access to Soviet era reaction to James Bond? Please, would someone who has read the book weigh in? I suggest that Cary Fukunaga's comments on Bond in the Connery films being "basically a rapist" be excised, considering the sexual abuse allegations against him. The criticisms of the character being misogynistic are already covered with multiple sources in the same paragraph, and his comments as another example and source are thus unnecessary from my perspective. I'm not making a joke here but it seems like a conflict of interest to have him cited as an example on people who have criticized misogyny in the IP. 78.149.121.207 (talk) 16:13, 14 July 2022 (UTC)

This edit [2] violates WP:COATRACK. If sources focused more on the connection between his views and allegations against him, it could be included, but certainly not if the only connection is a brief mention in a Daily Beast article. To preempt the "Seek consensus" template, consensus needs to be sought by whoever wishes to add contested material. 82.132.216.236 (talk) 23:02, 27 August 2022 (UTC)

Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit semi-protected}} template. Rather than reverting, I'm going to ping Stephanie921 so this can be discussed. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 23:40, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
Ty for pinging me and mediating a discussion between me and @User:82.132.216.236, @User:ScottishFinnishRadish. I thought the accusations against Fukunaga were relevant to the subject at hand, and I didn't do it to make a point. I would never do that because I want this to be an encyclopedia and not a journal, even if I agree with the hypothethical point.
I thought it was relevant to the subject at hand and important context, which is why I added the information and sources. Fukunaga's statements about James Bond in the Connery movies being a rapist is important in the section about misogynistic criticisms of Bond, since he was the director of No Time To Die. I believe the statement should be there, I see no reason to excise it, and would be surprised if it was by someone else.
However, if Fukunaga did what he's accused of then that calls his credibility into question, especially considering the multiple amount of accusations against him. I did not say he did what he's accused of - because whilst I have my own thoughts about that as a woman, this is not a journal like I said and that addition would be inappropriate.
But, if a Wikipedia sentence describes a person's statements on something - I.e. saying that J.K. Rowling has tweeted many times targeting the trans community, particularly trans women - and they have been criticized for said statements, the section is usually immediately followed up by describing the criticism in an encyclopedic fashion, since the subjects are related. I.e. in the aforementioned case something like 'Rowling has been criticized as being transphobic for these tweets, which she has denied'. I feel a similar sentiment applies here. Fukunaga's comments - regarding sexual abuse of women, which he criticized - are relevant to the accusations against him, since they are also about sexual abuse of women. I believe I wrote these accusations in an encyclopaedic fashion - simply stating that he had been accused and nothing more.
If a Wikipedia sentence describes any person speaking about a wrongdoing - and they are later notably accused of wrongdoing similar to what they criticized - I believe it improves the article to include that information. Because, using sources, it says that their reliability on the subject is in question, without actually saying whether they are guilty of what they're accused of.
To illustrate my point, I'll use a fictional example. If say,Walter White was real and we wrote a paragraph in 2012 on an article (not about him specifically) on meth. And he had made a public, notable comment criticising its manufacturing in early 2009 (before he was caught). If we wrote about his comments in the section, it would be in my view a problem if we were not to say that he was later found to be a meth manufacturer himself. Since he made the comments at the time he was a meth manufacturer, it would be vital info, as it shows he is not a reliable source on how bad meth making is. A similar principle applies here - since Fukunaga has (from my understanding) been accused of sexually abusing women during and predating the time he made comments criticising sexual abuse of women.
Although it's not a 1-1 parallel, since the other example would read as White's reliability being proven unreliable. My edit about Fukunaga says that his reliability is in question - not that it has been factually disproven using Wikipedia-standard WP:RS. It describes how he has criticized sexual abuse of women before saying he has been accused of the same thing. That's important info about anyone who criticizes something and is also accused of having done similar. The writing doesn't say Fukunaga is an unreliable source - it says has been accused of not being one. Not in the most literal terms where one of his accusers has criticized his comments, but his accusers do say that he is not a reliable source to talk about misogyny, since they are criticising him for being misogynistic. The sentence doesn't say his accusers are right, cos it just says they have made those criticisms Stephanie921 (talk) 01:02, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
My thoughts on the addition is that unless there are sources specifically linking their comments on Connery and the allegations against them it should be left out. It's not our role as editors to make connections not found in reliable sources, and doing so violates WP:OR and WP:SYNTH. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 01:07, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

I understand that @User:ScottishFinnishRadish. Ty for discussing this with me, you've been very nice. I didn't intend to violate WP:OR and WP:SYNTH and don't think my edits constitute violations of em, but I'm ofc happy to be reverted if a majority of people think that's the effect of my addition. I may change my mind if someone points something out I missed Stephanie921 (talk) 01:15, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
SYNTH states If one reliable source says A and another reliable source says B, do not join A and B together to imply a conclusion C not mentioned by either of the sources.
You said above that it's important information for context, but unless a reliable source made the conclusion, you're implying a conclusion not started by the sources. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 01:23, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
I see what you mean. I now agree the sentence reads like that even though I wrote it in good faith. If u wanna revert it now u can, although I understand if you want to wait first for a clearer consensus since IP 82 hasn't replied yet. I appreciate your outlook and will take what you said on board from now on.
Although I'd like to ask you: If I find a RS after the accusations which discuss his comments on Connery's Bond, would you be okay with me inserting my addition back discussing reaction to his comments? I feel like I may be able to considering his comments on Connery's Bond were very public and widely covered considering how unique they were for a production member this high up Stephanie921 (talk) 01:43, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
Only if the source specifically mentions their comments on Connery's Bond in the context of the allegations. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 01:47, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
Yeah that's what I meant :) Ty! Stephanie921 (talk) 01:56, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
No problem. Thanks for the productive discussion! ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 01:59, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
Yw, and you too! I enjoyed talking with you Stephanie921 (talk) 02:02, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for pointing out OR/SYNTH, which is far more appropriate and which I should have started with. Happy for you to include it if sources establish a clearer connection provided that it is not overly detailed (this is an article on Bond, not one of his directors, after all). 82.132.212.189 (talk) 08:14, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
Awesome, tyvm. Completely agree with your point about not making the connection overly detailed Stephanie921 (talk) 18:04, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

Most of this is unintelligible. Radio and TV actors are irrelevant here, since they did not appear in "movies". Dirk Bogarde never appeared in a Bond film. As for Bob Simmons he never portrayed Bond, he was a stunt double for Connery who portrayed Bond. Betty Logan (talk) 05:46, 10 November 2022 (UTC)
