Is this necessary?

[edit]

Andreas Papandreou thus kept an election promise to the people of Corfu, satisfying their long held demand that a successor University to the Ionian Academy be built.

The sentence above is only marginally relevant to the history university, and thus compromises the cohesion of the text. More importantly this information fails the verifiability criterion: there is no mention to Papandreou, elections or demands of the Corfiots at the link provided (http://www.ionio.gr/central/en/history). Therefore, I am removing the sentence. 79.130.182.209 (talk) 21:44, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redundance

[edit]

Ιt was established in 1984 by the Greek government under the Prime Ministership of Andreas Papandreou

This information is redundant, the Greek government has the sole authority of establishing Universities in Greece. Similarly there was only one Prime Minister in 1984, so adding his name does not enhance the quality of the article. 79.130.182.209 (talk) 21:49, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it does because it is not easy for a layman to establish that Papandreou was prime minister in 1984. An encyclopedia is supposed to inform without the pain of additional searching especially on results of obscure election topics. Dr.K. (talk) 08:40, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There are several problems with this line of reasoning. First, it assumes that a layman would be interested in the identity of the prime minister at that time. By the same standards, we might posit that they would be interested in the name of the education minister, or the first dean, whose role bears more directly on the university, whose identity is even harder for the layman to establish, but who are conspicuously absent from the article. Secondly, it is inconsistent by wikipedia's established standards to list the head of government who was in office when the university was established (cf. MIT, University of Manchester, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens). Further, arguing that the university was established because of a pre-electoral pledge seems to suggest that there were no valid academic reasons for its establishment. Finally, on the principle that something is noteworthy if it is unusual, the suggestion that Papandreou "kept an election promise" appears to suggest that this was not common practice. For all the above reasons, I suggest that only academically relevant information is included in the article. 79.131.147.228 (talk) 12:35, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Who is she, and why are her opinions noteworthy? Pending a satisfactory answer, I am removing the link to her speech per WP:SPS79.131.147.228 (talk) 12:44, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
