Separation between Malay Language and Indonesian Language
[edit]- This article should probably comment on why the Malay Wikipedia and the Indonesian Wikipedia are separate, and if there is a possibility of joining them. -AlexLibman 00:28, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
- 1) Q: Why - A: Major headache for Indoensian speakers, it too much apart now (different - I have trouble understanding the language written in the Malaysian newspaper) and not as simple as separating English American and British English. Political may be one of the reason as Indonesian as the biggest Malay language speaker (noted that historical document of the language was mainly found in Indonesia) and decided to name it Indonesia on 1928.
- 2) Q: The possibility of joining the twos - A: If Malaysian decided to become one of the Indonesian geographic territory, it is possible. I guess that is the odds. LoL Serenity id (talk)
- There is very little cultural exchange between Malaysia and Indonesia, compared to what happens now with the US and the UK, for example. We don't usually read Malaysian Malay newspapers or watch Malaysian movies, for example. So some a lot of words and terms used in Malaysia sounds strange and unfamiliar or even unintelligible to us, especially the Rojak language terms.
- It is said Indonesian TV shows are populer with the Malaysians, and Indonesian literature was taught in Malaysian schools in the past though.
- Another problem is standardisation. Indonesians and Malaysians succeeded in unifying our Latin spellings in 1972, and there is ongoing work on standardising technical terms. But we cannot agree on other things. There exists a general Malay dictionary which tries to cover all Malay dialects (written by Bruneians), but I doubt this dictionary is popular in Malaysia and Indonesia. Malaysians use Kamus Dewan, and we use Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia.
- Also, it seems the ones who like the unification of the languages are mainly academicians, linguists and (old) writers. Others don't care, generally. Conclusion? In the short term, I don't think there will be unification of both Wikipedia. Gombang (talk) 05:02, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
