Ibi, Spain → Ibi, Alicante – Doesn't this article fit the WP:PLACEDAB rule that says Cities should be disambiguated by a smaller administrative division if it will lead to ambiguity disambiguating by country?. Would it not be better be disambiguated by Alicante as the city is not widely nor popularly known in Spain, not forgetting there is Ibiza. - Comment. The circumstances here appear to be the same as those at Talk:Sanga, Kaduna State#Requested move 12 December 2021 in that the geographical entries listed upon the Ibi uidisambiguation page end with the country name — Ibi, Burkina Faso and Ibi, Nigeria, although it turns out that Ibi, Nigeria is only a redirect to Ibi, Taraba State. —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 04:00, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Roman Spinner: You see, the problem is that some of these cities with disambiguation tags are small cities that are less known. I am suggesting that settlements that are not large and not well known be disambiguated by a smaller administrative region, while larger cities be disambiguated by countries if the title wouldn't be ambiguous.
- Alicante in this case is a well known province of Spain and I don't think it's a bad option. Josedimaria237 (talk) 09:26, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
- Comment but there is not other Ibi in Spain, in which we have an article for? -- AxG / ✉ 11:59, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose. Disambiguating city names is defined by the policy at WP:PLACEDAB: "Places are often disambiguated by the country in which they lie, if this is sufficient." Since there are no other places named Ibi in Spain, the current title is correct. 162 etc. (talk) 18:04, 13 December 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose. Current disambiguation is perfectly adequate since there is no other Ibi in Spain. As for Ibiza (and Ibias, for that matter), they are disambiguated by being, well, different. Favonian (talk) 21:28, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

Ibi, Spain → Ibi, Alicante – Same form as Cox, Alicante; Cañada, Alicante; Orba, Alicante; Pego, Alicante; Planes, Alicante; Rafal, Alicante; etc. Nuvolet (talk) 23:35, 30 September 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:PLACEDAB. See previous discussion above. The correct solution would be to move articles such as Cox, Alicante to Cox, Spain, to avoid the unnecessarily specific disambiguation. 162 etc. (talk) 16:47, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
- OK I understand, however I think Alicante is quite popular (especially amongst British) and could be used here as in the towns I pointed. "Some countries specific naming conventions recommend using a sub-national entity (state, province, county, prefecture or similar) as the disambiguation tag. See § Region-specific guidance below." Spain doesn't have a convention for this therefore it's random and random sometimes is not good, and could be confusing (like many Valencian municipalities), therefore I'd suggest to get a convention and be more organised about these specifications. — Jɑuмe (dis-me) 05:28, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
- Let's do a random comparison... Adobes, Spain vs Alaminos, Guadalajara (both in the same province). What is the difference between these towns to use different labels or conventions? — Jɑuмe (dis-me) 05:35, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
- WP:PLACEDAB asks us to use Cityname, Countryname at all times unless:
- There are two or more cities of that name in the country, in which case Cityname, Countryname is ambiguous
- There is a specific exception for that country per WP:PLACEDAB#Region-specific guidance.
- Spain is not a specific exception. Cityname, Spain should be used in almost all cases. However, the status quo is that there are a LOT of articles (such as Alaminos, Guadalajara) which improperly use unnecessary disambiguation. Per the naming convention, that one should be moved to Alaminos, Spain.
- See also a related discussion from a few years ago at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (geographic names)/Archive 6#WP:PLACEDAB and disambiguating by state/province. 162 etc. (talk) 15:49, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation and the research, I understand what you're saying and agree with it. Perhaps I could start moving the articles than don't follow this convention to Cityname, Countryname. — Jɑuмe (dis-me) 18:39, 2 October 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose. No other places called Ibi in Spain. -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:06, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
