Useful?

[edit]

This page as it stands is not very useful. Either it's about Human Rights Education (in which case why not make it a section in the article on Human Rights?), or it is about a specific course/programme at the University of Essex (but why should this programme be included in the University of Essex article and not a description of other programmes?). I won't do anything to alter this article, but I can't see the need to clutter the University of Essex article with a Merge banner, so I will delete the merge suggestion from there, but leave it here. The main thing is that this article needs to be sorted to work out what it is trying to say, or it should just be removed. Sangwine 21:08, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Got rid of the Essex stuff. Now a generic stub. Will write more when I get around to it, hopefully soon. Wl219 10:18, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The whole thing should just be merged to human rights. --Descendall (talk) 06:12, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it should be merged. Article 26.2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states "Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace." and the preamble states "Now, Therefore THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY proclaims THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction."
I think if Wikipedia is to have a complete set of articles on human rights, as is the aim of WikiProject Human rights, then there should be an entry covering each or the rights and principles in the UDHR in more detail than the general Human rights article does. There is a lot that could be added to this article relating to the rationale behind including this in UDHR, and the rationale of teaching human rights in different contexts (medicine, engineering, politics etc). This would not be appropriate, because it is too specific, for he Human rights article. Tkn20 (talk) 13:45, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, perhaps you're right. I'm the one who said that it should be merged, but I was really doing it more based on the terrible state of the stub at the time of the suggestion, which was pretty much just a dictionary definition (and not even a very good one at that). I guess plenty more about the UDHR could be added. --Descendall (talk) 04:55, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We (staff at Human Rights Education Associates - www.hrea.org) think that there should be a separate Wikipedia entry for human rights education (HRE). We have prepared materials to include - didn't know until today that an entry for HRE had already been started. We're happy to work on this entry, as we have quite substantive content, including rationale, and will be inclusive in terms of references to organizations actively involved in HRE (there are a lot). We plan to cross-reference to the HR entry as well as others already on wikipedia. We will reference Article 26 but also address the worldwide HRE movement. —Preceding unsigned comment added by HREA Inc (talkcontribs) 16:11, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This is the problem. Everyone says that they are going to make this article more than a dictionary definition, and in the end nothing ever gets down. --Descendall (talk) 20:57, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Made a start - hopefully Human Rights Education Associates will fill it all out soon(?) - but I think there's enough to justify the article now. Tkn20 (talk) 22:59, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orgs

[edit]

Many of these do not seem to be HRE orgs, rather HR orgs. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 07:12, 21 April 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Agree with template on HRE organisations

[edit]

I've just edited part of the Section on HRE Organisations to provide a link and bring this a little up to date, but I agree with the template on this Section. It's not useful to have this much detail on specific organisations in this article. Perhaps simply list relevant HRE organisations? Regarding the article itself, perhaps just have a chronological survey of the specific UN instruments on HRE? At the moment it seems all over the place. Future Editing Plans

[edit]

Hello, I am a student at Texas A&M University working on an editing project assigned by User:Etherfire. I am looking to review this article and assess possible changes to improve its clarity. These changes will include restructuring, rearranging information, and focusing the article. Any possible changes I plan to implement will be posted here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 153.33.83.24 (talk) 15:41, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have completed my edits for this article for now. I did a lot of restructuring of the sections and tried to find better areas for information. I also tried to go through each sentence and make it less biased. I went and found more sources to support this article but I found what might have been a plagiarized source. There was a lot of deletion that I considered doing in this article including the section with the quotes as I don't feel like it benefits the article. Below is a summary of my more detailed edits.

More in depth summary

[edit]

Even now, I do not think I got to do everything I wanted on it, so I’m going to continue to work on it in the future if I can. This article felt like an essay that someone uploaded to Wikipedia. I had to go through all the writing and try to rephrase it in a way that did not contain any bias or peacock language. I believe that Wikipedia said that articles should be written without any promotion, so I had to make all of the sentences factual instead of opinionated. I began with the lead. I tried to smooth out their sentences, as they were a little unclear in the original way, and take out repeated information. I placed some info from later in the piece up there as well but have not had the chance to incorporate it in yet. I then went down to history as I know that is the section that is usually first after a lead in a lot of articles. I tried to find an article that was like this one, but there were not many options that looked similar enough to mimic, so I ended up settling with the right to education article. I worked on the history section of the article and quickly tried to find sources as so much of this information was unsupported. That was when I realized that another article was plagiarized off of for this Wikipedia article or vice versa. (https://www.k12academics.com/education-issues/human-rights-education/human-rights-education-history) This was not the only section that plagiarized/was plagiarized off of. I could not put 3 of the 4 paragraphs in quotation marks so I tried to rephrase sentences where I could, but as I was not the researcher, I didn’t want to change them too much and possibly change the meaning of them. I also had to rearrange the information as it was not in chronological order. This had been one of the later sections in the original piece, so I had to make a lot of Wikipedia links show up in this one as well. I found other information in the article that related to current events but had not been updated since at least 2018. I then created a subsection titled progressing development. I was very unsure about this as I know there will come a time when this section is also outdated, but I feel like current events had to be mentioned in the present tense. When I moved onto the next section that I retitled as education, I was not fully sure what to include in here. I wasn’t sure if the focus should be on how the education has incorporated this subject or the educating of people on incorporating human rights education into their curriculum. This may be why the section may seem a little unfocused still. When I moved onto the model’s section, I was very confused as I did not really know what these were. Even now, I am not totally sure they should be included as this feels like it may be going too in-depth, but I ended up having to research it myself so I could give a brief description as to what was happening. This was the other section that might have been plagiarized, and even then, I was not sure what each model was by their explanation, so I had to go find other definitions that made more sense and add their sources. The last remaining model was a big block of information. I had to cut out what I thought was unnecessary and then combine the information into separate paragraphs. The point I am at now is looking at the section full of quotes. I wanted to scrap the whole thing, but I felt like there was some useful information there. Plus, I would hate to entirely throw out someone else’s work when it could just be reorganized to fit. I am also still looking at the Organizations section. This was also a section with a lot of text that could probably benefit from some information cutting. For this piece I spent a lot of time on trying to make the sentences comprehensible and find sources, but I also had to do a lot of reorganization to try to give it some logical flow from one section to the next.
