Origins

My hunch is that the name, in one form or another, has been around in Celtic tribes since Roman times. Hugo in Germany, Hugues in France, and Huw or Hughes in Celtic Britain. Romans established the tin and copper routes across western Europe, and Celtic tribes continued it. (Ever noticed Breton and Welsh have a strong similarity.)
