Talk:Hodgson's hawk-cuckoo
Behavioral Ecology Assignment
[edit]This article was extremely brief and still requires a lot of work. I was confused because the name of the Cuckoo (Hodgson’s) on Wikipedia was actually not the name found in our textbook (Horsefield’s hawk-cuckoo) even though the species name was the same: Cuculus fugax. Perhaps the alternate name could also be added to the article as clarification. The article focuses solely on the parasitic behavior of the species. There is no information about feeding, predation, courting rituals, or any other behavioral traits of the birds, and there is also no general description of their physical characteristics. However, the article did have all the essential facts from my textbook about the parasitic behavior, including the trick with the yellow wing patches that resemble false gapes, and how sometimes hosts are tricked into placing food into the patch. The only other thing that could be added in terms of parasitism is that experiments that darkened the yellow patches on the Cuckoo chicks resulted in reduced provisioning. It would also be helpful to add a photograph of a Cuckoo chick brandishing the yellow wing patch, like the one in the textbook. Ihyuan (talk) 19:59, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
Behavioral Ecology Course
[edit]Hi, I am reviewing articles for the behavioral ecology course I am taking this Fall. The Wikipedia entry on the Hodgson Hawk Cuckoo Cuculus fugax is the shortest of all the ones I reviewed. It only discusses the parasitic behavior of the Cuckoo, which exploits the visual cues parents use to determine which offspring to feed. By exposing a false gape, a yellow wing patch, the cuckoo induces its host mom to feed it more food. All the information in the book is also provided in the article. I would like to see a table of contents with multiple sections added to this article. More background information on the Hawk Cuckoo, like where they are found, what their diet is like, and what their common predators are the most obvious facts that need to be added. Further research on the animal may help me come up with other things to add. Katheefwah (talk) 19:52, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
