Guide Topics

[edit]

Would a "Human Owner's Manual" type guide be appropriate for this section? Envision guide content to merge 'developmental psychology', 'medicine', and 'nutrition', etc. to allow reader to theoretically fix and properly operate our physical vessel (human body). --Iption 02:58, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The "guide disambiguation" page on guide covers both the book / Owner's manual guide and the person guide quite well. I can't think of any way the rename the person "guide" to anything more specific to clarify the difference between these. Any ideas? Since there are so many different sub-types of people guides, any attempt narrows it down to one of those, and fails. Kengele (talk) 23:17, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I feel the topic could be better presented by merging the terms Guide, Tourist Guide, Tour Guide and Docent, to better understand the differences in the roles. Ghostieguide 02:49, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that the topic "guide" is better presented in different terms. Note: There's no official term called "tour guide". The terminology "tourist guide" is officially accepted, voted and used since 2003 by all tourist guides in the world, the World Federation of Tourist Guides Associations (see www.wftga.org), the European Federation of Tourist Guides Associations, (www.feg-touristguides.org), the European Standardisation Committee (CEN) and the International Standardisation Organisation (ISO)87.202.2.146 16:24, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting. "Tour guide" gets 6.6 million google hits, while "Tourist guide gets just under 4.2 million". -- Mwanner | Talk 13:16, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Ghostieguide that some of these terms could be merged and appear as sub-headings. On this page a heading such as "guide" (literal meaning) could include sub-headings of "tourist guides"(or "tourism guide"), "scout" (used in the more military sense), and "metphysical guide". Sub-headings under "tourist guide" could include "tour guide", "Hunting guide", "fishing guide", "safari guide", "mountain guide" et cetera. This could have a short explanation about the role of "guide associations". Sub-headings under "metaphysical guide" could include "teacher, "yogi", "philosopher", "priest", "guru", "mentor" et cetera. Kengele (talk) 23:17, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello everybody and thanks for your contributions! I believe it would be quite appropriate to create a list of famous safari guides, especially those whose experience can be deemed outstanding and whose activities stretch beyond mere guiding, namely: writing, photography, scientific research, filming, etc. For instance in Africa, where the industry is extensive and developed enough, guiding is considered more of an art than anything else. Besides, there is a number of books praising the skills of specific African guides (both fictional and non-fictional) - so as to come to terms with notability guidelines! Last but not least, a listing like that will help other people know their way around in the industry. I would love to know your opinion on the topic. - Fumbu 10:18, 19 August 2010
