Inexpertly, gudgeon derives from the same root as gadget, which derives 'from Fr. gâchette "catchpiece of a mechanism" (15c.), dim. of gâche "staple of a lock."' Lock staples are "female", fitting over lock hasps; much as gudgeons are "female", fitting over pintles.24.56.197.47 (talk) 23:32, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
