General
[edit]Have given article a general edit, written a Lead and added further references. I have deleted reference to her being a clipper ship as I can find no evidence that she was built to be particularly fast, but please add back if there is a source. Davidships (talk) 16:14, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
- Search the trove for Gananoque clipper, you will find an advert transcribed here "FOR FREIGHT, or Charter, the fine fast-sailing A 1 clipper ship GANANOQUE, 785 tons, J MORRIS, commander. Apply to CLEVE BROTHERS and Co., agents, 80 Queen street south.". It also appears she was running between London and Australia as well as NZ at this time. --Tony Wills (talk) 10:31, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
- The references to her as a clipper are replaced with barque from about 1870 - perhaps corresponding with the opening of the Suez canal ??? --Tony Wills (talk) 10:49, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
- I see she was listed under "Gananoqui" in the early American Lloyds register, but this appears to be a typo rather than an alternate or previous name as it doesn't appear in any oher records that I've found. --Tony Wills (talk) 09:31, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks - re clipper, have done and added also a NZ ref. She is listed in MNL and American LR as "ship" up to 1874. I think the change to a barque was in the 1874-6 rebuilding (no longer a crack vessel and needed the economy of smaller crew). She traded widely, but no other notable voyages to hand. Agree "Gananoqui" is mistake (no change of name in British register), I've also seen "Ganonoque". Davidships (talk) 18:45, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
Another Gananoque
[edit]The Royal Navy apparently had a Gananoque too, see List_of_ship_names_of_the_Royal_Navy_(G–H), but I have no other info on that --Tony Wills (talk) 11:05, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
- HMCS Gananoque was a Bangor class minesweeper - link added.Davidships (talk) 18:45, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
