Duplicate article?

@BlackJack: CricketArchive seems to think this is the same guy as George Dupuis, but doesn't list any matches where he played for Essex. Thoughts? Jenks24 (talk) 08:39, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

@Jenks24:, you're right. It is the same man. It looks like his first name was unknown when this article was written and has been discovered recently. Essex and Hornchurch in the late 18th century was effectively the same team; the names were interchangeable and really we should default to Essex as the team name. It was a county side based in Hornchurch, at Langton Park, and sometimes it was called the Hornchurch team in contemporary reports. There wasn't the hard and fast nomenclature then that has existed since the county clubs were founded. As Dupuis played for Hornchurch, he was an Essex player, and vice-versa. Thanks for the prompt action and explanation. I thought it might be something where a better knowledge of English geography would help. It's exciting that research continues to be done in the topic area and players that only a few years ago we just had surnames for can now have full biographies written about them. Yes, if you should ever read Roy Webber's history of cricket written about 1960, he said that research till then had been so thorough that he doubted we will learn much more. In fact, a great deal has been learned since then. Knowledge of early cricket was seriously impacted by the fire at Lord's in 1825 when the pavilion burned down and reams of unique data went with it.
