Fairmount Line

Some trains take the Fairmount Line from Readville to South Station, instead of going past Hyde Park, Ruggles, and Back Bay. I couldn't find this information in the HTML schedules on the MBTA website, but if you look carefully at the PDFs for both the Franklin Line and Fairmount Line, it's there. Line naming

Most MBTA commuter rail lines are named by their terminal station(s). The Franklin Line is named by its second to last stop. This may be worth mentioning in the article, and if there's some reason for this, it would be nice to have that reason noted. JNW2 14:05, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Formatting issues in linked NH timetable reference

The reference for the linked New Haven Railroad (predecessor owner of this line) timetable refers to a page 18. This is not fitting for timetables. In this and other cases, the pages are actually often not numbered. So, an arbitrary locating of a "page 18" will not bring the reader to the pertinent page of the timetable. But a 'Table 18' will take the reader to the pertinent trains. On a similar note sometimes there will be a few timetables on one literal "page." So, the formatting conventions of Wikipedia need to be modified to the specific nature of railroad timetables.Dogru144 (talk) 05:42, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

 Done In this case, the timetable has both numbered pages and tables, so I put the table number and name in the |chapter= field and the page number in the |page= field. It is also possible to use the |page= field directly for table numbers if no page numbers are present; in that case, |nopp=yes will suppress the p. abbreviation. Service/line naming

Clarifying the service/line distinction:

  • the Franklin Line is a service that runs from Boston South Station to Forge Park/495, using the following physical lines:
    • the Northeast Corridor between South Station and Readville
    • the Franklin Branch between Readville and Forge Park/495

The Franklin Branch itself is a subset of the ex-New Haven Midland Line, which ran between Readville and Blackstone and has been abandoned west of Franklin. The Midland Line itself was assembled from the following:

  • the main line of the Norfolk County Railroad (as completed by the Boston and New York Central Railroad) between Islington and Blackstone
  • the portion of the main line of the Midland Railroad (again, as completed by the B&NYC) between Islington and Readville. The track continues northeast from Readville as the Dorchester Branch.

Mackensen is correct. Framingham Secondary is the Framingham-Walpole-Mansfield line, used by Foxboro trains between Walpole and Foxboro. The Franklin Junction to Forge Park/495 section is part of the Milford Secondary (though the MBTA appears to consider it part of the Franklin Branch).
