step down

[edit]

How can someone step down as a co-founder? It is actually not a position.

Introduction:GPS

[edit]

The first paragraph says: "This service is available to users with GPS enabled mobile devices, such as iPhones and Blackberries". I am using foursquare with an HTC Desire and it works perfectly with network-based position. So there is no need for GPS at all. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.71.100.79 (talk) 13:33, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. Add location either GPS or network based LarryLACa (talk) 18:48, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Badge references

[edit]

I think these need to go. There should be better references than people's profiles. Unless these are all going to be pointed to one of the official staff's profiles if there is no other reference.--Crossmr (talk) 06:31, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I tend to agree with the view that we should only reference official staff profiles. With that said, this also needs to be made more complete. There are random badges out there that this list fails to mention (e.g., the cryptic "Mr. Bill" badge held by user "susiepops"). Chacon (talk) 00:33, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

References Section

[edit]

Please note: There is no need to add quotes in the "title" section of the references. The quotes will be added automatically. If you add quotes there will be a double set of quotes.

Correct: title=Foursquare Twitter Page

Not Correct: title="Foursquare Twitter Page"

References Section

[edit]

Any thoughts on changing the reference list to make it appear more professional. For example, instead of the way it is written now

Jennifer Van Grove (2009-11-19). "Foursquare Goes Global With Launch in 50 New Cities".
Mashable.com. Retrieved 2010-03-12.

we could make it more uniform like such

Van Grove, Jennifer (January 11, 2010). "Foursquare Goes Global With Launch in 50 New Cities".
Mashable. Retrieved March 12, 2010.

Basically what we're doing here is...

1. Displaying the author's name - last name first and first name last

2. Dropping ".com" from websites

3. Using the date format - Month, Day, year

Any suggestions?

--Q-cue (talk) 01:55, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest NOT dropping the .com from websites so you know the actual URL. To someone who doesn't know what Mashable.com is the word "Mashable" is meaningless.

Since an inline reference to a URL includes the actual link, I don't see how it would be meaningless. If the reader isn't sure what "Mashable" is, he or she can click the link to the reference, and voila! Asked and answered.--~TPW 12:38, 25 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

List of badges

[edit]

I reverted the external link to the list of badges, although the List of Foursquare Badges has been deleted. The content has been userfied and needs to be merged into the main article. A complete list of badges would be too long, but it seems to me that some of the significant ones should be mentioned as well as some of the geo-specific/time-specific ones to provide some flavor of the badges available. -- Autopilot (talk) 13:28, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The badges are back without discussion...I think someone needs to eval this before it gets out of hand again. None of the badges currently listed are noted, and only a handful are arguably notable WP:Notability // also, this list seems to be instructional WP:NOT#MANUAL Lancerobey (talk) 00:07, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I came to the same conclusion, independently, and deleted the badge list before I saw that other people felt the same way. Wikipedia will never be a useful or up-to-date source of information for the minutiae of foursquare badges. The best we can reasonably do is to link to the official foursquare badge page, which we already do. —Dominus (talk) 15:35, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I wholeheartedly disagree with arguments given:
"A complete list of badges would be too long" -- there are DOZENS of lists longer (re: http://briancray.com/2009/03/31/ultimate-list-of-awesome-wikipedia-lists/ ) ... although I do agree with this comment's author about splitting the badges into what can be achieved regardless of location and "geo- or event-specific" badges
"... and only a handful are arguably notable" -- to the approaching-1M or so foursquare users who have the opportunity to achieve the non-geo/event-specific badges, I would "argue" that they ARE notable
"this list seems to be instructional" -- now we're just splitting hairs. This is a wording-issue then, simply requiring clean-up
"Wikipedia will never be a useful or up-to-date source of information for minutiae" ...
and yet we get gems like this:
http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Comparison_of_vampire_traits
And for "up-to-date"? Isn't "In the news" a feature on Wikipedia's front page?
I am VERY much in-favor of returning the list of badges and would encourage further discussion. --161.11.123.38 (talk) 21:17, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I do not understand your argument about "in-the-news", and I don't see what relevance that has to this list of badges. Your argument that Wikipedia has longer lists than this one is very weak. At best it is an argument of the type WP:Other stuff exists, which I suggest that you read. But all of this is beside the point. So far nobody, including you, has presented any reason why this list of badges should be in Wikipedia at all. —Dominus (talk) 14:20, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think a good comparison would be XBOX 360 Achievments et al. Wikipedia doesn't have a list of those, neither should the 'game aspect' of Foursquare. —J.budisantoso (talk) 22:17, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

ARGH DELETIONISTS

[edit]

This is why I hate wikipedia. Stop deleting stuff! Should I make a rule that "Wikipedia is not your baby" so everyone can just chill out? And what with User talk:Spartaz doing the deletion and then retiring? Shenanigans! Eagleapex (talk) 14:39, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Foursquare Day

[edit]

There is a movement afoot to declare April 16 Foursquare Day. I would like like to post it on the main foursquare page, but feel I should wait until either there is an official announcement, or a large enough grassroots movement. Here is an example of the blogs being posted about the event Why April 16th Could be a Great Day for Your Business! Natebw (talk) 17:49, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That source doesn't seem particularly reliable, and until there's serious media coverage, I'd hold off. Steven Walling 19:43, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It is official now, just need to decide where to add it.Natebw (talk) 14:19, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Seems like it would fit as an item in the Category:Unofficial observances. I can create the stub page or would one of the editors who has been working in this area longer prefer to do that? The @4sqday group appears supportive, so could be asked for images & logos for Fair Use.[1] —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ejl (talkcontribs) 13:42, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've written an article about Foursquare Day, but after discussing a few things with admin NawlinWiki it got delayed for a minute. I will be having another discussion with NawlinWiki tomorrow so he could take a look at the final copy before it's published. I'm not going to bore you with the details, but like SteveWalling mentioned, finding the proper independent media sources was key.--Q-cue (talk) 05:56, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I've removed the related apps section. Aside from being basically a coatrack for linkspam and advertisements, it really had no place in the article at all. This isn't the place to promote your app based on another one. Only notable services should be linked to. — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 05:38, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

See Also

[edit]

Inline with helloAnnong's removal of 'related apps', I think that the 'See Also' section could use some cleanup WP:SOAP Lancerobey (talk) 00:10, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

pleaserobme.com

[edit]

I think the article should have some discussion of pleaserobme.com. I will try to get to it in the next few days of nobody else does it first. —Dominus (talk) 15:36, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Further to Dominus' comment, I recommend that this proposal is extended in to a "Controversies" section. At the moment I feel the page reads like a company sponsored 'about' page, rather than a dispassionate overview of the technology, it's use and outcomes in society. Recognition of Pleaserobme and other location based SN issues should be at very least linked to this article. Slewth 21:30, 25 August 2010 (GMT)

I created a "Privacy" section and included information about PleaseRobMe.com and Jesper Andersen. Feel free to expand and refine the section. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 02:14, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The result of this discussion was to merge FunkyCanute (talk) 08:39, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am proposing that the Foursquare Day article be merged into the Foursquare (service) article. Until such time as the Foursquare Day event has received significant notability to warrant it's own article and until such time as the event has occured more than once, it makes sense as a subsection of the service itself.

This is also to address the current conflict of interest being experienced on the Foursquare Day talk page. I believe being a subsection of the Foursquare (service) article will lead to a greater number of disinterested editors providing feedback on that content. "Check-in" is not explained

[edit]

This article does not explain what "check-in" actually is. As in:

Users "check-in" at venues using a mobile website, text messaging or a device-specific application.

What does a user actually do to "check-in"?

--Mortense (talk) 17:56, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • I added that users check in by selecting a venue from the list of venues nearby.

Privacy

[edit]

The part in the "Privacy" section that talks about "Bob Smith" at Starbucks needs to be edited to use a more formal tone. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 23:37, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Changed style layout to improve flow, but the section still needs to be re-written. The example and surrounding text were lifted whole-sale from the article referenced DJSparky huh? 02:45, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Added intro to provide general context. Needs links to other Wiki pages related to internet privacy and tracking. LarryLACa (talk) 19:07, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Capital f

[edit]

Why is the first f in the title not capital? Mydreamistofly (talk) 14:45, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The style is very inconsistent. About half of the article renders it as foursquare, the other half Foursquare. Do we have a source saying they style their name with a lowercase f, or is it an outdated style? —C.Fred (talk) 03:30, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalizing "foursquare"

[edit]

Despite the stylization, even the company capitalizes its name at the beginning of sentences; I have corrected this. Other sources consistently capitalize the company name, and this article (mostly) does not. I'd like to reach some consensus on when to capitalize it. Thoughts?--~TPW 12:34, 25 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I completely agree. It's a proper name, and should be capitalized wherever it appears according to our style manual. I think it's also a trademark, and MOS:TM says "trademarks rendered without any capitals are always capitalized." – Pnm (talk) 23:52, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Except see eBay. The {{lowercase title}} tag is precisely for this sort of thing. As for foursquare's own policy, not that it really matters here, an email I received recently from one of the C-Suite execs has foursquare with lowercase unless it's at the start of a sentence. FunkyCanute (talk) 10:18, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
eBay has a capital, foursquare does not. Reliable, independent sources capitalize Foursquare. – Pnm (talk) 14:08, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Foursquare (website)Foursquare – The (lack of) spacing makes the current name unique (Foursquare currently redirects here), so the "(website)" disambiguator is superfluous. Cybercobra (talk) 20:14, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction of OpenStreetMap

[edit]

Foursquare have announced that they will be moving to OpenStreetMaps for their data. Perhaps this could be mentioned in the article. http://blog.foursquare.com/2012/02/29/foursquare-is-joining-the-openstreetmap-movement-say-hi-to-pretty-new-maps/ Lukys (talk) 13:53, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why?

[edit]

Okay, the page explains what Foursquare does, and how it works, and what prizes you can win. But nothing is said about users' motivation for doing all of this. Perhaps it's because I'm not a Twitter-er (don't see the point there, either), but it escapes me why one would take the trouble. I've been browsing the website and most locations listed don't really have reviews or anything, they just say, basically, "This place is here." And I already knew that. This really needs to be discussed, or elucidated, or something. --Michael K SmithTalk 19:13, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent point, I was wondering what's the use of all this (apart from collecting lots of data about the users that can be sold later) 10:15, 7 March 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.245.170.109 (talk)
