In the Broadman hymnal (used in many Southern Baptist churches) the source is listed as from a 17th century work called the Munster Gesangbuch (I am sure I missed an umlaut or two). I will try to get some more info. Ellsworth 23:01, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]


In Dr. Henry Ward Beecher's PLYMOUTH COLLECTION of hymns, (published in 1855, and which I have in my possession) the hymn appears, English translation and all, at #658. Therefore, the date of translation of 1873 appears to be erroneous.
